Don't know why I love storefronts that are below street level. There's something about looking down into a store that makes it more interesting. The bookstore was great long before Borders made bookstores cool. A tiny coffee station is all it offers the lounger, plus a few chairs, but the selection is amazing and they will order special requests. The U of C uses it for writers and speakers often.

Remember the movie You've Got Mail? Well, this bookstore doesn't have Meg Ryan and it's not about Children's books, but it is one of the few remaining independent bookstores in Chicago. Worth a visit if you're on the shopping stretch of Hyde Park on 57th street. Collection is not very large - it is a small bookstore - but it does have the latest bestsellers, etc.

This bookstore now resides in what used to be a basement apartment. It is located across the street from the University of Chicago so they have a very good business. It used to be a 4 room apt. and each room of the bookstore focuses on a different catagory. They actually have an excellent selection. I was able to find two books I was looking for and purchased them for a very good price. The clerks were pleasent and helpful. Definetly a charming store with alot of character.
