This bookstore has been my salvation through the awful seasons inherent to the Midwest. This bookstore specializes in scholarly books and is almost as good as Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge. It is located by the the University of Chicago and is worth the trek from anywhere in Chicago or its surrounding suburbs. If you are snowed in though you can check out their website at http://semcoop.booksense.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp Prices are reasonable and the staff is knowledgeable and interested in helping. Many author events in the Chicago area are held at this store.

Though it mostly caters to students at the nearby University of Chicago, this Hyde Park bookstore is a great place to find a book in the humanities and social sciences. The staff is passionate and very helpful. The bookstore is consumer owned – for a small fee, you can own a share and are entitled to discounts and special member-only sales.

The Seminary Coop is located across the street from the University of Chicago main quadrangle. It's loosely affiliated with the school - a large part of their business comes from selling books for classes - but it is by no means a 'school bookstore'. The Seminary Coop's business is about serious scholarly books in the humanities and social sciences. They have a vast selection available for browsing and if you're visiting the University, I highly recommend dropping in if you have any interests along those lines.
