The cuisine is a wonderful blend of the familiar and uniqe, and French and American. NoMI strives to use independent and family-run food vendors in an effort to get the best ingredients.
Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert are the menus offered; I've only been for dinner. The sushi rolls are delicious (although very expensive, from $7-23) as is the increasingly-hard-to-find foie gras. Main courses are made up of beef, venison, chicken fish, and sweetbread. NoMi, of course, has an impressive wine list--the online PDF is 63 pages.
Be sure to save room for dessert, or get the chocolate "Share Plate."
If you want a taste of NoMI but are living on limited means, you can eat in the lounge. The Black Angus sirloin burger is still $21, but it is damn good.

More
The food at John Barleycorn is exceptionally good for bar food. It's definitely worthy to be called a "restaurant." The fish and chips are great. They are served with freshly-made chips (not fries). The Greek salad is also very good - always made with fresh ingredients.
The drinks are on the expensive side but they often have drink specials.
The main room is typically very dark. The backroom is very clubby.
Ladies...the restrooms are top-notch! Usually very clean and they even have the automatic toilet seat covers.

This was a place frequented very much by Al Capone himself. So when you step into this place, you will be surrounded with little tid bits of history, including Al Capone's life and his secret tunnels. This place has an awesome atmosphere that is always fun to be at. The jazz music played here just adds to the setting and you feel like you have stepped back into time. The crowd here is pretty laidback and you will see a lot people trying to dress like Al Capone as well.

My family and I go to Sayat Nova all the time. We love it. We're Armenian and Sayat Nova serves the same food that we grew up with (they even have the same dishes as my Grandma). It's definitely authentic. Sayat Nova has great food, great atmosphere, and great service. The staff treats you as family. You can even do a hookah if you'd like. Highly recommended. I love this place.

I went to this place on my 22nd birthday. With the different floors you get to experience many types of music/dance. The staff is very friendly and security is tight. Valet parking is available to those who want it but there is a garage near by. They have a variety of drinks to choose from and basically you can have anything you want or not. The crowd is usually older like late 20's and early 30's but a great place for mini concerts and dancing.

This club is a bit dingy, smoky and located in kinda a funky hood. This is the setting that is ideal for Punk bands, up and coming indie/alt bands and the alt/country bands they book in here sometimes. Look what CBGB in NY has done for bands! The drink prices are low as is the admission for alot of their diverse shows. There is street parking available only. Most of their shows don't start until aprox. 10 pm. Support local bands!

More
Well, I'm actuallly not sure if the many Nobel Laureates at the University of Chicago actually do drink, but any who imbibe have definitely done so at Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap at some point in the last few decades.
Jimmy's is a Hyde Park Institution, and is pretty much across the road from the University of Chicago, hence giving it quite a strong University flavor. Most days of the week, a large portion of the clientele will be University affiliated, but it has enough neighborhood and working regulars that it doesn't feel dominated by the college kids.

More
An ideal place to meet friends for a good drink, live music and fresh artwork. The crowds can pack this place quickly on weekends; weekdays are better and there is usually a beer special. The people working here are generally nice.
The volume is usually turned up too high to have great conversation. A punky, bikerish type of place, with plenty of brews to choose from.
And unfortunately, they have taken down the wooden, English pub-style sign with a portrait of a woman on each side.
