On a recent trip to Rock Bottom, I got a chance to look around before I dined here. I checked out where they brew their own beer and saw the pool tables and the rest of the restaurant. They have souveniors in front and they sell any variety of their own microbrew. The meal was hearty American style. The service was very good and it was a relaxed atmosphere on the evening I was there, although I know it gets packed on weekends.

Since they brew their own beer, I'm bound to go here from time to time, even though it isn't exactly my favorite kind of place. They have happy hour specials on appetizers, which make them pretty cheap. The beer is not cheap, but it's pretty good. Goose Island is the better brewery, but Rock Bottom has some good stuff, too. We got beer samplers for $6, expecting to choose 3 or 4 things. We were pleased and alarmed when 4 oz. glasses of everything on tap showed up at our table. I think we had had 9 beers to try and it was 3 in the afternoon. Geez.
I've always wanted to check out their brewer's dinners. The menus look great-- 4 or 5 courses with paired beers. I've never had the money to go, unfortunately, but I've heard they're good.

We've gone here a few times after work, a nice crowd forms, we drink beer, have some appetizers. In the summer the rooftop bar is open and that is great, to sit outside in the middle of chicago. Food is pretty good and portions are fairly big. Nothing about it really stands out but its not a bad place either, a good standby.

Rock Bottom definitely gets pretty crowded - but that's because it's a nice fun place. It's nothing fancy, but I would say it's still about half a step up from a TGI Friday's for example. I enjoy the food - even though it is mostly bar food, it's done well. They do have specialty beers unique to Chicago that are worth trying. Plus there is a pool table area in the back that can be requested for large reservations. The juke box is nice too. So for a bit too busy sports bar, it definitely has a little more to it.

Went here with my totally lame work staff, and was mildly suprised. The scene is pretty yuppy, the people looking to get hammered and all, but the food and beer was pretty good. still, totally EXPENSIVE. But I guess if you're a young professional, you can afford it, right? If you do go, try the Nachos or the chicken wings. I love them chicken wings...
