It is a terrific place if you can get in as there is literally a decade long wait list:-) or more important know folks who are members. They have really renovated the place over the last twenty years. It is a private club, so it is invite only, but the Olympic size pool is heated in the winter. The hot tub is great. They have a couple of restaurants and of course a mountain of tennis courts.
The big event is of course the tournament every summer. Since tennis whites are required, it looks like Wimbleton in the days of old rather than today's Opens that are more like grungefests imho.
Altogether the lawn dinners are wonderful. What relaxed country lifestyle should be like minutes from Seatt.e

For local news on Bike to Work Month and a current listing of all cycling related news here in the NW, check out the largest bicycle club in the nation, Cascade Bicycle Club. http://www.cascade.org/Home/ This non-profit organization has been around for over 30 years and puts on many popular local events like the STP, Flying Wheels, RSVP and more. Free daily rides are available all over the city and Cascade's own education foundation teaches cycling skills and safety through various classes, some of which are located at their club house just off the Burke Gilman trail at Magnuson Park.

The place does look rather dive-y, the front desk staff is a bit sketchy, and the clientele is mostly geriatric, but this is actually a very good place to take kids for swim classes. You don't have to be a member to take classes there. They will let you start anytime and prorate the class fee (usually $64 for 8 classes, if I recall correctly). The instructors range from pretty good to great, the pool is big and has a lot of shallow-water space, and the water is usually fairly warm. The dressing rooms/showers are fine, with lots of lockers, benches, etc. We've gone off and on for several years and overall, it's been a fine experience.

We recently started soccer with our little one, which sounds crazy since he's only 18 months, but Arena Sports has a class for 18-24 month-old toddlers. The great thing for me is the class is on a Saturday so it's something a working parent can participate in (it seems as if all parent-child classes are during the work week).
You can pay for the full session or pay as you go, and the cost is the same. Also, the first class you can do for free as a trial, which we did. I was a bit concerned since my son is still a "new" walker, doing the penguin thing. But, he fit in just fine.
The class was 40 minutes long (perfect amount of time for this age group), and the "drills" were fun and tailored to the age group...and the coach was at ease which is good since they were definitely wandering toddlers beating to their own drum.
I think my son enjoyed the end the best, when the Coach blew bubbles for them to catch.
Parental advice: Have some coffee before you go because being around so many energetic toddlers at 9am will make you TIRED!

In a time when kids sports are becoming increasingly driven by the egos and desires of adults, Magnolia Soccer club is pleasantly kid-focused, particularly at the younger ages (5-8). The two priorities are: (1) learning skills and (2) having fun. All kids, regardless of skill level, can enjoy making new friends, getting exercise, and ending the season as a better player than when they started.
The club offers free clinics, great training for coaches, and even trains its own older kid players to become referees for the younger kids. It's a great community builder.

I think the Sonics games are a really good time. The team may not be doing too well, and who knows whether they'll be here for another 20 years. But you may as well go while you can and enjoy the action. The game presentation is pretty good, and there's always plenty of energy...certainly more than at a sleepy baseball game. While the crowd may not be as loud as it is at Quest, a night at the Key is usually going to be pretty entertaining.

PEPS is a fabulous seattle organization which connects new parents to others in their neighborhood. Infant groups meet once a week for four months with a trained facilitator to discuss highs and lows and a different topic each week. the format is very conversational and full of sharing and listening. Evening groups tend to be comprised of couples (around 6 families) while daytime groups typically are a stay at home parent and infant (around 10 parent/child pairs). Meetings are in the homes of group members.
I was in a newborn group with my husband and greatly appreciated hearing how other new families were (or weren't) settling in. since neither of us had much experience it was very normalizing to hear about other parents struggling with the same issues we had. Also, i thought it was great for my husband to have a place to observe other parents since he wasn't going to any of the daytime mommy groups i had.
Recently i facilitated a newborn group. The training given to me by PEPS strongly promoted our roles as facilitator, moderator, mediator- not expert, teacher or promoter.
I highly recommend this program. I still see parents and children from my newborn group and our kids are 2 years old.
One last note, i have heard that some people have signed up online and then never heard back. i encourage everyone to be proactive and call the office to confirm their registration and subsequent assignment to a group.
