I have been in Swansons a couple of times and loved it, but even more useful and interesting have been the times I've called them. Once they referred me to another nursery close to my parents' house for a tree I wanted to get them--instead of having me buy it through them. And I just tried to get a rare tropical herbal plant (murraya koenigii) and they didn't have it, but responded with enthusiasm and a plan when I gave them a resource of where to get it. These people are lovely and amazing. I expect I'll be able to buy this rare herb from them next year.

try the City People's Garden and Design folks in madison. we've twice had Anne come out and consult with us. the first time she did quick sketches based on what we told her we wanted and then we had the installation team give us bids on various components like a granite retaining wall and a flagstone patio. we decided to go with the retaining wall and had them install it and i think it turned out beautiful and made such a big difference in our yard. we did some of the other features ourselves based on her ideas. i recently had Anne come out again to advise me on plants for the beds in front of our house. i felt like both times Anne listened to what we wanted and incorporated our ideas when they were appropriate and advised us against other ideas like plants that wouldn't do well in specific locations. she even offered advice on the cultivation of existing plants and referred us to a bamboo specialist to help us control a bamboo that had escaped it's container.
prices are competitive but not the cheapest. work was done professionally and on schedule. definitely recommend these guys.

this is a wonderful nursery at the north end of seattle on Aurora. Trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulk materials (compost, bark, playchips, manure, etc.), pots of every size and shape. They have a very knowledgeable staff who can help you with every plant problem or need. To amuse you and the kiddies, there is a koi pond. It seems almost every weekend, they have other experts giving seminars or classes on everything from ikebana to orchids. An absolute class A nursery. Check it out!

Ringo has been doing our lawn for over a year now and we couldn't be happier. Recently, we asked him to level our ridiculously lumpy backyard and we came home one afternoon to find it done and completely weeded. He went beyond our expectations...as usual. We are going to completely re-do the backyard this summer and can't think of anyone we'd trust more to do it than Ringo. Ringo rocks!

Such a gorgeous nursery! The combination of their rows of beautiful, healthy plants and helpful staff make this my favorite place to buy plants in Seattle. Everything I purchase from Swanson's thrives in my garden (which is no small feat, considering I tend to garden by neglect).
I was confused by the previous review, because every encounter I've had with the staff at Swanson's has been pleasant and informative. They always stop to answer any questions I've had, and if they don't know the answer will track down someone who does.
Pros: helpful, knowledgeable staff, beautiful plants

City People's Garden Store always has an excellent selection of plants, especially perennials, shrubs and annuals. They also have trees that are suited for our smaller city lots. They carry high quality tools and a nice variety of organic fertilizers and soils. I also love their selection of pottery, books, cards, and gifty items.
The nursery is well organized, tidy, and the plants always look great.
They also have a Landscape Design and Construction department, so if you need help with your yard, you can hire their designer to come to your home for a consultation.
