We've been members of the Discovery Place for 2 years now and it never gets boring. They have a kids place for younger children between the ages of 12 months to 6 years. It has a water table where they can dam up the water to hold back water and then flood the remaining table. Nature areas for them to crawl through, a barn to teach animal sounds, a "fossil" area to make and tons more JUST in the kids play area. Then there are the exhibit halls with a weather area showing how tornadoes are made, a gem and mineral area, an aquarium area with a touch pool, a rain forest with tropical birds and tortoises. That's just on the first floor. The second floor is the science floor, teaching kids how magnets work, levers, axles. They also have that floor the human body and it's organs. And every few months they have a new huge exhibit. Right now the exhibit it Grossology which teaches about the not so pleasant things the body does. A few months ago it was If These Walls Could Talk, which was about building structures. Before that it was the Dinosaur exhibit etc. There's a gift shop and snack area. Downstairs is an eating establishment. You can't go wrong at the Discovery Place.

An excellent park! Completely free located in downtown Charlotte, you wouldn't know it was in the middle of downtown. Very secluded in a very nice residential neighborhood. Has basketball courts, covered picnic area, bathrooms, a large playground for younger and older kids. Most of the playground is shaded to keep you cool. It has a small creek running behind it. Has lost of large open grass to play catch or just to run around and be a kid. Pets are welcome on a leash. And the best part is that they have a water fountain park. It's gated around the fountains and has several different styles of fountains for the kids to run through and play with. Make sure you bring a change of clothes and towels. The kids have a blast playing in it and it's hard to tear them away.

More
Charlotte's YMCA has a highly recommended after school program for children in (K-5) and (6-8). Most children will be bussed in from their elementary or middle school and first the children will get a snack. After the snack, there will be a 45 minute homework session which is followed by outdoor activities. If weather does not permit them to play outside, they will be able to play in the gym. The price of the program is very competitive, compared to CMS sponsored programs. You will need to pick your child(ren) up by 6 PM, if you fail to do so, you will be charged a penalty fee.
