I have been to Charleston, SC twice in the past 3 years, and both times we have had lunch at Hyman’s Seafood. Some locals seem to think of this as a “tourist trap” because it can be difficult to get in without a wait. We always arrive early and have never had to wait for a table. Hyman’s specializes in fresh, local seafood and we haven’t been disappointed. They bring boiled peanuts (which I love) to your table. We have always started our meal with the fish spread and crackers. I have always had the Napoleon appetizer as my lunch. It is three layers of fried green tomatoes, crab dip and fried shrimp with a delicious remoulade sauce. My husband loves the shrimp po-boy sandwich. Hyman's Seafood is located in "historic Charleston. Specializing in fresh local seafood, award winning she crab soup, great wine at supermarket prices and fast friendly service." Their website is http://www.hymanseafood.com/ . They ahve been in business for more than 115 years! That is amazing. I love this place! All their dishes are super! Their prices are just right, too, especially for a place such as this. I will always be a customer of Hyman's because they know how to treat a customer. For instance, our wait was a long one on a Friday night, but they give us a 20% discount without us asking for anything or even expressing our displeasure for the wait. What a great restaurant! BTW, I always get fried okra with gator sausage. Yum!

don't get me wrong, the food was really good, but i was expecting something spectacular considering that Hyman's has been voted "the best seafood in Charleston" like forever in various newspapers and magazines. I guess due to all the hype, i was expecting the shrimp to do a little dance number on my plate =) i don't know... but anyway, they say to expect a two hour wait unless you go early or late. we went around 6pm on a tuesday and the wait was half and hour. the only thing that really disappointed me was i got one of those free crab dip coupons from one of the tourist stands downtown, then i received my crab dip, it was literally just a bite! i guess next time, i will ask for the crab dip THEN present my coupon after the fact......so maybe my dip wont be the "free" portion. i will go back. yum.

Dining at Hyman's was truly a highlight of my trip to Charleston's. The food was terrific and, surprisingly, reasonable priced. I had my favorite, fried shrimp. My husband had a seafood platter which featured lobster. I was picking off his plate the entire time. We didn't see any desserts that attracted us, so we actually ordered crab dip, an appetizer for dessert. Almost each table is engraved with the name of famous people that have dined at that particular table. Bob Villa had eaten at my spot. The location is opened on Meeting Street, in the heart of Charleston. We went for supper and we did have to wait about two hours. It was worth it. If you have someone with a disability, make sure you let them know when you check in. I don't believe the second floor is accessible. The bad thing about this restaurant...they do not take reservations. Try to get there before 6 p.m. if possible. You can always walk around shops downtown while you're waiting for your number. Follow your dinner with a carriage wide and a walk around battery park. Makes for a nice, romantic evening.

I had read good things about Hyman's Seafood and it seems like a popular place, so we tried it out when some relatives were in town visiting. The atmosphere was fun and it was interesting to see all the pictures and autographs of famous people who've eaten there, but the food was really terrible. I ordered cajun chicken alfredo and it tasted like it was shrimp alfredo and even had a few chunks of shrimp in it (it wasn't supposed to) and my husband's dish had a different kind of fish in it than he ordered. They brough my husband the wrong mixed drink. In general, it was just not very good. I won't be going back.
