What's great about Meijer is the selection that they offer--its pretty much a one-stop shop for... everything. Food, cosmetics, sporting goods, electronics... pets, even (though I do not recommend it for this purpose...). The store is well-organized, too, so that things are easy to find.
The problem, though, comes when you take into account just how popular this store is. With all of its conviences, there are a lot of people that go there, making it oftentimes too crowded for comfort in some sections, and check-out lines are ridiculous. This is not the place you go to for a quick shopping trip or just to pick up a few items.

Every time I go to Meijer, I have to wait in line to check-out forever. They definately need to increase their staff. Besides the lines, they carry a nice selection of produce, including some relatively exotic fruits and vegetables. Another drawback to going to Meijer is that you have to battle the traffic on Prospect, and I've found that going to Meijer is just not worth the hassle.

I can't deny I go to Meijer sometimes when they have sales, because I am poor and I need to buy food where it is cheap. I avoid it as much as possible though, because of their pet section. Meijer sells small animals and birds without any instructions for their care, and keeps them in crowded conditions with no stimulation. I can't speak much to how they keep their animals, but their birds are housed in deplorable conditions. They will sometimes keep a dozen parakeets in a cage the size of a ten gallon aquarium with little food and no toys. The birds can't even spread their wings without hitting each other. Sometimes the birds are obviously sick, and I have never seen an associate anywhere near the section.
Not only that, but they purposely sell cages that are much too small for parakeets, and try to represent them as perfect parakeet homes. Any parakeet kept in a cage this size (less than half the ASPCA's recommended size) will get sick and aggressive. I have written to the company several times, but they ignore my comments and suggestions. If you care for animals, I would suggest any store in C-U besides Meijer.
