Nobody said anything about "The Shanty" - a motorcycle bar directly below the hotel that features louder-than-loud music blasting until 2.a.m. supplemented by the roar of choppers. We closed our windows but could not stop the throbbing beat. Boom! Booom! Boom! Then the cops came to break up a motorcycle gang fight at 2 a.m. Calls to the front desk said "We can't do anything about it." Add to all that the cockroach in the bathroom in the morning, we checked out a day early. At least they didn't charge us for leaving a day early, but I was REALLY angry and the guy at the front desk knew it.
Pros: close to the ocean
Cons: motorcycle bar, bugs

they don't tell you about the noisy bar that goes til 3 a.m. and they tell you about how cute their "themed" rooms are like "mirrors" or "posted beds" make up for the insects in the bathroom or grime on the windows. This place has seen better days. the beach is just 3 blocks away, good for surfers
Pros: close to the beach
Cons: few rooms have beach view

Cardiff by the Sea Lodge rates in the top 5% of all the best places we have stayed. We have traveled the entire Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico and stayed in dozens of wonderful places, and they are at the top. They are very friendly and accommodating. Each of their theme based rooms are uniquely decorated including Jacuzzi tubs, original artwork murals and upgraded furnishings. Many rooms have ocean views, and they are conveniently located across Coast Highway from the beach. The sunset views from the rooftop garden are the best you will find. The rooftop fire pit and Jacuzzi provide a great place to gather. The Lodge is designed to be both a beautiful place and has been carefully constructed to ensure guest room privacy and quite. We have stayed there a dozen times and will definitely return.
Pros: Views, ambience, friendly staff, wonderful rooms
Cons: None

Rooms have a lot of deferred maintenance and hairs in sink and shower. We had made reservations so we had to stay, but just the feel of the lobby tells you that things are not well attended to. More of a motel 6 than a nice Bed and Breakfast which is how they bill themselves.
Pros: near the beach
Cons: not clean, noisy bar nearby

For an anniversary weekend last fall, I took my wife to Cardiff Lodge, and I think they define Romance. The rooftop views of the ocean, complimented with a fireplace and hot tub started our evening off. The room was spacious and romantic. One of my favorite things about the Lodge was the innumerable intimate garden nooks?each showing the gardener's passion for flowers. I felt like I was on a tropical island. Laurie graciously escorted us to our room and made sure we knew how to use the fireplace and other amenities.
Trevor suggested a wonderful restaurant. I had read others reviews about noise from a bar and train. We sleep with windows wide open, and heard some bar noise, but it was happy noise, and it died down early. As for the trains, well, we are romantics, and they evoked dreams of exotic trips like the Orient Express, Istanbul..... trains, oceans, We slept so well. The brunch the next morning was marvelous. There was lot of fresh fruit, coffee, muffins, Danish..which was enhanced by sitting outside in the gorgeous setting. We hope we can return before another anniversary

What a wonderful escape from reality!
Cardiff's wonderful rooftop fireplace sunsets were amazing. We enjoyed a glass of wine, sheltered from pedestrian cares, and watched the sun set with a panoramic view over the ocean. The staff, Laurie and Trevor, made us feel free from the working world, suggested great restaurants, and gave us great suggestions for things to do.
The breakfast was fantastic, from the fresh fruit and pastries to the intimate garden setting. So many romantic sitting areas..one could hide away, or make new friends.
we would come back in a heartbeat!
Pros: ambience, service, location, views, privacy, romance, breakfasts, architechture, gardens

I was utterly disgusted with this lodge - overall it was a really bad experience for me and my boyfriend. I have never experienced such conditions in any hotel and do not wish to repeat it. Insects, hair on the floor in the bathroom, burned out lightbulbs and a "manager" with an attitude. Add to that a biker bar next door going until 3:00 a.m. NOT RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE!
Pros: close to the beach
Cons: dirty with a loud bar next door; owners do NOT live on site

My girlfiend spotted a flyer about CBTSL, and looked it up on the internet. The photos on the website looked promising and she was looking for something special for our 1st anniversary. She booked a visit a month in advance.
The room was lovely, even though a train would come by at least 15 times a day and during the night, blowing a very LOUD horn as it neared our location. The bar next door was also very loud with people laughing and talking all night, Harley's blasting by, etc.
A window shade broke as I was opening the blinds, crashing down and nearly splitting my skull. Then one of the sinks didn't work and water was shut off without notice or a note. When it did come back pressure was very low, and the faucet spewed out black gunk all over my toothbrush. Finally the AC condensation soaked the countertop where all my receipts were, rendering them illegible. In the process my laptop's power cord was soaked as well, which I tried when I got home and it fried my laptop.
During check out, we tried to explain all these things to Trevor, the owner's son. He didn't address the soaked power cord. When I showed him the soaked and blurry receipts, he just smiled. He said we must've left the windows open, which would've caused condensation. We did no such thing. When we said the water had been cut off and the sink didn't work, he said he knew but no note was left for us when we arrived. Similarly, no note had been attaced to the blinds, warning us not to touch them, even though he said "the parts have been on order for a month." The parts are 2 end brackets that could be picked up at Home Depot for under $4.
Worst of all, Trevor was hostile during the entire check out process. He was incredibly argumentative, never once apologizing about a thing. He even accused us of "nitpicking" and called us "low class," which infuriated both of us.
Our recommendation: Don't go there unless you want to be treated like dirt.

My husband and I chose to stay at this hotel for our honeymoon, not knowing anything about San Diego or it's outlaying areas and were very impressed. We chose a less expensive room but were generously upgraded when we arrived, being allowed to choose from a variety of rooms. We chose to stay in the Country French room. I loved how I could sit in the tub and see the fire (which was daily stocked with wood) , it was just the relaxation that I needed after the stresses of wedding planning! The staff was friendly and even went to extent of having the places that we wanted to visit mapped out for us when we came down to breakfast the next day. If you are looking for a place that is sterile and uniform, this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for a place where you can let your hair down and just enjoy yourself, I would recommend checking this lodge out. My husband and I would definitely return!
