Houlihan's is about all that Carbondale has in terms of "casual upscale" dining. The atmosphere is classy and fun. They have a sports bar area with flat screen tvs on one end. The food is tasty, but kind of generic. I would recommend the Asian wings, though. The burgers are also good. If I lived in a bigger city that had a wider variety of restaurants, I would probably never eat here. It's a good place for what it is, though. Nice for celebration dinners.

I highly recommend visiting Cristaudo's, if only for their ledgendary pink cookies. They serve delicious gourmet coffee and have a large selection of other tasty baked goods like brownies and lemon bars as well as many other cookies. They also have many varieties of bread, bagels, and muffins. I've never eaten their hot food in the store, but I've been to several events that they catered and the food was awesome.

Panera is a bakery/restaurant that serves sandwiches, soups, and salads. The ingredients are fresh and high quality and the sauces and dressings they use are very tasty. My favorites include the Greek Salad, Black Bean Soup, Portobello and Mushroom Panini, and Garden Veggie Sandwich. They have a wide choice of sides and if you ask, they also have baked chips. From the bakery side, I've only tried the bagels and the muffins, but those are both very good.

Who doesn’t love a good frappuccino? Gloria Jeans makes some of the best around, with seasonal favorites that I wish they’d add to their year-round menu. They seem to have a frappucino for every holiday imaginable, with my
favorite being the pumpkin spice. The employees are usually college-age girls who are pretty friendly. There are a few items available to purchase to use at home, such as different types of coffees as well as a few trinkets. There is no Gloria Jeans near where I live now and that makes me
very sad.

You cannot go wrong with a drive thru liquor store. When I moved to Carbondale to go to college this was the first time I ever saw a drive thru liquor store. ABC is a little liquor store with a friendly staff in downtown Carbondale. They have a large selection of beer and liquor. Usually you can see some local characters if you linger in there a while, which is always a bonus.
The most convenient thing is the drive thru. I am still fascinated by this because even now that I live in Texas it is very rare to see a drive thru liquor store. If my memory serves me correctly you could even buy beer by the can (large cans) there and they always had a variety of tobacco and magazines with shady characters lingering around.

Do you want to take Fido or Fluffy for a walk? Well, Animal Crackers is the perfect place for a break on your path! This store specializes mostly in dogs and provides obedience training, doggy day care, and kennel boarding, but also has a large selection of catt products. I have shopped here for cat food, collars, shampoos, and purifying fountains. The staff is helpful and goes out of their way to help you locate what you are looking for. One word of caution though -- if large dogs scare you, this might not be your place! Owners and staff alike can be seen walking dogs on leashes, but credit must be given because the dogs are well controlled. If you want to support local business and take care of your pet, this is your store.

More
Rosetta Stone is basically the only place in Carbondale where you can find more obscure art, design, and music magazines. They also have a selection of books as well as DVDs for rent. The DVDs, I believe are way too expensive, but unless you have Netflix, there is no other way to get obscure art films in the backwater town.
