I went to Herrell's in Harvard Square once after a bad Ben & Jerry's experience. They were super friendly and helpful and the place was big and clean and pretty cool. I was particularly fond of a big jungle mural on the back wall. The ice cream was quite good as well, certainly as good as Ben & Jerry's, probably even as good as J.P. Licks. Overall a pleasant experience, though a little pricey obviously.

Herrell's was my first love in Boston ice cream, and though I've found new favorites, it's still a good standby. The standard flavors are all here, along with some more unusual flavors such as chocolate pudding, mango, and Earl Grey tea. The hot fudge here is fantastic, and the real deal is the sundae with your choice of toppings. Take a seat over in the room off to the side -- it's an old bank vault!

Boston has really cornered the market on homemade ice cream (I humbly say) and Herrell's is a perfect example. They have the old standbys here as well as a few more exotic attempts, but mainly they specialize in your chocolate and oreo and black raspberry and sweet cream. They also have chocolate covered bananas on a stick, and they're better than I anticipated. Lots of toppings, efficient staff, and a long long line in summer that feels congenial rather than taxing. Open late!

Delicious home-made ice cream! You think ice-cream is just ice-cream until you come to Herrell's. It's just so creamy and cold, it tastes perfect. I just cannot describe how good it is. They have tons of flavors available, and there also yummy toppings if your stomache pleases. Herrell's ice cream will not be forgotten, it is just such a delicious treat to have. Especially in the summer time.

Herrell's is an absolutely great place to stop for ice cream. The ice cream is wonderful! I love lemon mousse especially although their less exotic flavors are also great. Compared to Toscanini's, another gourmet ice cream place in the area, the flavors are relatively tame. (No Guinness flavored ice cream here, thank you!) The ice cream has a very high fat content and a fairly low air content (which makes it a superpremium ala Ben & Jerry's or Haagen-Dazs) and it is absolutely delicious! My friends also rave about their frappes...
Secondly, the decor is great. It is really fun to have the experience of eating ice cream in a converted bank vault (complete with aquarium murals). It is very clean and smells wonderful from the ice cream.
Prices are slightly higher than chain ice cream stands (like Baskin Robbins), but they are worth it. (and they are cheaper than Toscanini's). Clearly, Herrell's is for everyone. Many Harvard students are there, children of all ages, yuppies - it is not a stuffy environment...

The surly waitstaff make me feel like I'm back in San Francisco. The sweet cream is a damn fine selection, but the place is pretty expensive. The smallest mix-in dish you can get is $5.05 - roughly the price of two pints of premium ice cream at the local grocery.

I love Herrell's and am so glad that I don't live too close in vicinity to it or I would weigh 500lbs! They have very high quality ice cream in a vast variety of flavors to fufill your sweet tooth. They have the best malted vanilla ice cream that I have ever tasted. When I'm feeling extra indulgent, the smoosh-ins are the way to go. They take the ice cream of your choice, put it on a slab and smoosh in candies that you choose (kit kats, nuts, etc). Herrell's is my guilty pleasure!

Herrell's is definately over rated. They don't have that many flavors of ice cream and the flavors that they do have a rather generic. Furthermore, each scoop costs more then $3, and they are measly. Not a good bargain at all. The location is pretty good, as it is close to the Harvard T-stop, and unlike many other ice cream parlors, Herrell's does have quite an extensive seating area, which is good. But aside from that, I don't have too many other praises.
