My husband and I went there a week ago for dinner - we'd never been but had heard friends rave about Roots. I loved the ambiance - classy but comfortable but the food was really the star of the show!
I started off with a pineapple cilantro margarita - it was spicy and delicious, well-balanced, a really well-made drink. My husband and I shared the crab and avocado appetizer with vermouth viniagrette - when it arrived we were both surprised at how many huge fresh chunks of crab there were. It was delicious and after we took a bite we both looked at the menu again because we couldn't believe it was only $11. It doesn't happen often, but I just love getting really fantastic food for a great price - it makes me happy. :)
Our server was very helpful and attentive as well - she knew her wine, offered me samples and helped me pick out a glass that went with my short ribs, which I had next.
They were served with some delicious greens, root vegetables and pickled horseradish - the ribs were
meltingly tender with the perfect amount of fat mouthfeel without it feeling fatty at all. Plus, once again the portion was huge - I had a full dinner plus a big lunch out of the leftovers. The amount of value you get for the price at Roots really amazed me.
Especially since our meal had that 'certain something' ...you know how you can tell when the chef really cares about their creations? It's hard to put your finger on but you know it when you taste it. Roots has got it. Thanks for a wonderful evening - we will definitely be back.
Pros: well-crafted, well thought out cuisine

This place is awesome. Roots and 360 are sister restaurants. Roots has excellent happy hour. I have been to lunch and dinner and Roots and always had good experience b/c of very tasty food. The service on the other hand is RUDE. The wait staff is very rude, slow and obnoxious. If they get some people who are friendly on the wait staff, they will have a good turn around.
Pros: Food, Parkind, Ambience
Cons: Service

Every time my In-Laws come to visit they insist on going to Roots, and they are world travelers who frequent all the best restaurants.
The food is expensive but worth the price. For bargain shoppers I recommend their happy hours where you can get their world-class food at very reasonable prices. Their drinks are also excellent.

I went to Roots last night for happy hour and was suprised to see a beautiful new bar. It is much larger with very comfortable leather chairs. The portions were quite large for happy hour and the food was great. The bartender was nice and extremly noligable about the food. I really have enjoyed every experience I have had at Roots and would strongly recommend it to any one who is a lover of food that doesn't come a can!
Pros: large portions, good service, friendly staff
Cons: noise

I've been 3 or 4 times within the space of a year and a half. I figure they're new, they'll get things sorted out. Evidently not. Went today for lunch, and in the midst of the meal was overcome with the thought "Why does anyone come here?" The service was bad, the food was slow, no free refills on drinks other than water, miniscule portions, and above average prices. I was discussing the place with another diner, and we were in agreement that the fish & chips were crappy, and to be avoided.
So, in short, there is really NO reason to go to this place!
Pros: I guess it's where the beautiful people want to be seen.
Cons: Pretty much everything else.

Having lived in San Francisco and the Chicago area for many years, I was disappointed in the restaurant scene in Vancouver when transferred here. I was so thrilled to discover Roots--a terrific atmosphere (be prepared for a bit of noise, however), beautifully-prepared food, great wine selection, and fantastic service (our server managed to be very attentive while avoiding mid-bite conversation). Don't let the location scare you away--you'll be transported once inside--and parking is a breeze.
Pros: Urban chic, easy parking, imaginative menu, excellent service
Cons: Noisy at times--not a place for quiet conversation

Ordered my favorite dish at Roots last night, their short ribs and was served a bowl of pasta topped with some stringy flavorless meat (I will take their word for it that it was short ribs but it could just as well been stew meat) in a very bland watery sauce. Apparantly they changed the dish about a month ago and to the waitresses credit she offered to bring a different dish but I elected to give it try (won't do that again). My wife's Chicken was excellent as was the Potato Soup so all was not lost. Why they would make such drastic changes to one of their signature dishes doesn't make sense. The restaurant review highights the Short Ribs and talks about the meat served in a Port sauce and falling of the bone, well there ain't no bone and there ain't no port sauce. It's hard to recommend a restaurant when you don't know if what you recommend and what they serve next time are even remotely similar. Maybe their expansion is distracted them but someone clearly had a Brain Freeze
