New World Tortilla -- Burlington, Vermont
This is one of those word-of-mouth places that can only exist in a college town like Burlington. Sandwiched in between a nail salon and coffee house (how academic!) in a very inauspicious block just off Church Street is New World Tortilla. Now, although I've been there several times I always order the Chicken Club. Why would I get anything else? Its name says it all (both the sandwich née tortilla and the place): a huge tortilla in various and tantalizing flavors wrapped around chicken, slabs of bacon, lettuce, veggies, and a creamy sauce that if you drowned in it would (probably) not be a horrible experience. I have (once) gotten the shredded beef burrito, it was equally delicious, but it's no Chicken Club. The place is small, but there are tables and chairs and great window seating to look out on the edges of downtown. If I get something for take-out I can usually get out of New World for less than $6 or $7 without getting something to drink as well.

I grew up in this area. Whenever I go back to visit I try to get up here to eat. This is one of my favorite restaurants. Not only is the menu selection good but the food is wonderful. The restaurant is located right on the beautiful Lake Champlain.

I have been eating their food since they opened in 1989 at UVM and have yet to find better food anywhere in town. If you want healthy food at a reasonable price then Ahli Baba's is the place for you! They have the best Falafel I have ever had.
Pros: Fresh Ingredients, Quick Service, Reasonable Prices

I went to Yankee to get a tattoo a month ago. The staff was really nice, knowledgeable and all of them make such amazing art. I didn't feel out of place or alienated at all. As another reviewer mentioned, you have to make an appointment for custom work that requires lots of drawing but when I went in they were taking small walk ins as well. I'll go there again!

Great Harvest Bread Company is a business that I write about with some reluctance. I love them so much, that I am afraid if word gets out about them, I won't be able to get near the place.
They are a business that represents themselves well. They bake a darned good loaf of bread and take care of their customers. It is a simple thing and their breads are one of my simple pleasures.
They bake a variety of bread, but some of my favorites are Honey Whole Wheat, Brownie Bread and Chocolate Babka. The Cinnamon Swirl is always a delectable choice as well. I go weekly and make my purchases. One loaf of the Honey Whole Wheat lasts about a week.
They have a calendar that they give out to patrons that shows the breads that will be made each month, and which breads will be available on specific days. I keep it on the fridge and scheme which bread will be coming home with me each week. The calendars aren't the only things that they give out. When you walk into the bakery you're cheerfully greeted and asked if you would like to try a free sample of their fresh bread. Imagine the surprise on a first timer's face when they are handed an entire slice of bread! I am not exaggerating on this, they cut a full slice for you to sample.
Prices are average for a large loaf of bakery fresh bread. About $4.00 for sandwich breads and slightly more for dessert type breads. It is worth every penny when you try that first slice (on them). They also give back to the community with charitable contributions earned from their "Baker for a Day" program. Which shows that they not only care about the bread they bake, but the people who will eat it.

North Country Books -- Burlington, Vermont
The surplus of students (and the "studious") in a college town (usually) makes for great used bookstores and North Country Books is the crown jewel of used bookstores on Burlington's Church Street Marketplace (see my review of the "Crow Bookshop" for other options). A great space stacked to the ceiling with books from classics to cookbooks, sci-fi to self-help, and everything in between. The staff is helpful, knowledgeable and very, very low-key, no high-pressure salespeople here. Prices are very reasonable and the selection especially for a used bookstore is impeccable. Oftentimes you can find hardcover books in good condition that were on the bestseller lists less than two months ago. Unlike most used bookstores that carry a lot of remaindered titles, North Country has a great selection of a popular and cult author's catalogs, again probably thanks the clientèle who buy and sell their used books at North Country, yours included. Prints, vintage posters, greeting cards, and antique maps are also for sale. Browse around the "borders" of Church Street, but buy down at "North Country."

Reading is one of my favorite activities. I find it relaxing and peaceful. I like to spend an afternoon browsing the shelves at Borders Books. I recently purchased a great biography of legendary Red Sox baseball player Ted Williams. This bookstore has something for all tastes. They even have a cafe where you can have a bit to eat and drink. Sometimes there is acoustic entertainment as well.

The Crow Bookshop -- Burlington, Vermont
I love the Crow. It's not Church Street's premier used bookstore (see my "North Country Books" review), but it's got a great selection of hard-cover and paperback books. It's a smaller space than "North Country," but its coziness and creaky floorboards make up for its lack of volume and lend a "funkiness" that should be called used bookstore chic. I'm always impressed with their table of new arrivals -- usually recent bestsellers in fiction and non-fiction that everyone was reading a few months back. They also carry a good selection of kid's books, not the classics per se, but great books for kids that won't set you back while you're trying to save for their college fund. The Crow is just books, no cd's, dvd's, smoothie's, or coffee drinks -- when browsing or buying "The Crow" bookshop is a delight.
