Blimpie -- South Burlington, Vermont
I know what you are thinking . . . with all the great delis and places to get a sandwich in the Champlain Valley, why choose . . . Blimpie? Simple, they're the best. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah it's a chain, but the local ownership makes this Blimpie way more than the average sub shop or for that matter sub, way more, if you get my meaning. Ron and Shelley are fabulous! Show me a place to get a sandwich where even if you haven't been in for weeks or months, the moment you step to the counter the person waiting on you says, "veggie sub on wheat, no tomatoes, extra hots" and I'll show you Blimpie in South Burlington, I'm amazed every time. The place is kept clean and the staff is always friendly, helpful, and will make sure you have everything you want or need, "and would you like a cookie with that?, got to love the upsell. If you go with the meal deal and the aforementioned large veggie you can get out of Blimpie for less than $10 and still have a couple of bucks left over for a cookie.

More
This adorable chocolate shop is found in the heart of the Church Street Marketplace which makes it the perfect location to stop for a bit and browse. They have all sorts of great truffles and fudges as well as the standard chocolate bars and such. You can also see them making some of the chocolates in the front of the store. They also offer coffees, teas, and (of course!) hot chocolate, which is delicious! Plan to spend at least a few minutes browsing and snacking.

Shaw's -- South Burlington, Vermont
Have you ever read "The Mist" by Stephen King? Yes? No? No matter. The Shaw's Supermarket on Shelburne Road in South Burlington reminds me of the grocery store that the band of (un)lucky survivors hole up in to wait out the titular weather of King's story. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong, creepy, or scary at all about this store -- it's a showplace, the Cadillac of grocery stores. When it opened a few years ago it was hailed as the largest supermarket in the entire Shaw's chain. You can buy anything from bedspreads to bedding plants (in season), and skinless, boneless chicken that you could marinate and serve on a bed of saffron rice. Their deli, produce, and meat counters are well stocked and carry affordable choices and high-end choices. There is an in-store Dunkin Donuts if you need a little pick-me-up in the sugar and/or caffeine department. How can you argue with a store that has everything? There are no shortage of grocery stores in Chittenden County, but Shaw's is without a doubt, one-stop shopping. And if you find yourself needing to wait out the apocalypse or buy a day's, week's, month's, or year's worth of grocery, medicine, and anything and everything for your home and family, welcome to giant grocery store nirvana.

sick of dominos? try leonardos pizza. Good pizza but you have to wait for it. Breadsticks not so good and cheesy bread is worse. The red sauce has to much garlic so don't plan on kissing anyone after eating it.

Okay, you got me. I am a coupon fiend. I love to save money. Since this is part of my genetic make-up, this grocery store is for me.
They double $1.00 coupons, and triple coupons up to .99 in specific locations. When they run sale items it is often geared to work with the coupons you've clipped so sale items are often free or nearly free.
I'm not talking about free beef roasts, but the occasional free toothbrush or box of tissue isn't a bad thing, right? I know they do this to get me in the store and it works.
The variety there is fair, but since they aim to be lowest in prices, they have to make up for it by not always having every brand you're looking for. I prefer to purchase organic when ever possible, and they have become better at having these offerings- but it is still rather scant.
The produce departments are usually tidy, but the quality doesn't blow my hair back. It is fair and that's about all I can say. The meats and fish are fresh and the butchers/fish mongers are very informed and pleasant to deal with. The deli is usually courteous and moves patrons through the larger lines at the deli counter.
So go, clip coupons, and save- but make sure you have an Advantage Card, or you won't be able to partake of the sales.

Leunig's Bistro serves above average food for Burlington, and does it for above average prices. It's an alright place to eat with a somewhat obnoxious atmosphere; they have a bad jazz duo there on a couple nights each week. It's what old couple look for when they're trying to respark the romance with a bottle of wine, but I find it's a better place to get brunch when trying to clean up a hang-over.

In this world there are two kinds of chinese food: there's good chinese food, which is good, and bad chinese food, which is better. Eating at china express might not be the most authentic experience, but I eat it like candy. It's the sort of food you crave late night or on rainy afternoons. If you call in your order then your take out will be ready in twenty minutes or so, and I believe they deliver these days, I wouldn't recommend eating there, but it's real close to blockbuster, and hey, what goes better with chinese than a movie?
