5 Spice Cafe is probably Burlington's best restaurant. Their food is consistently well made and the service is excellent. The best thing for a new customer to do is rustle up 2 or 3 friends, and go have the Sunday dim-sum brunch (dim-sum means with dumplings). At the Sudnay brunch, waitstaff come around with trays of small dishes (hot and cold) and you get to pick whichever ones are appetizing. Each little plate has 3 or 4 pieces. This way, you all get to sample a nite or two and see what you like. You then count up your total of plates and pay that way.
Definately try to evil jungle prince and the peanut sauce with noodles. They also sell thier peanut sauce, and I make sure to get at least 2 jars every time I go. My father always requests a jar of their thai sweet chili sauce.
Hands down, the best place for a meal in B-town.

Flatbread offers a very limited menu, all of which is great. they have only a salad, a selection of different pizzas, and a couple deserts. It's a great atmosphere, and you can watch them make and cook your bread in the wood fired hearth while enjoying their wide selection of micro and house brewed beers. They pay a lot of attention to the quality of your food and your experience.

Great Harvest Bread Company is a business that I write about with some reluctance. I love them so much, that I am afraid if word gets out about them, I won't be able to get near the place.
They are a business that represents themselves well. They bake a darned good loaf of bread and take care of their customers. It is a simple thing and their breads are one of my simple pleasures.
They bake a variety of bread, but some of my favorites are Honey Whole Wheat, Brownie Bread and Chocolate Babka. The Cinnamon Swirl is always a delectable choice as well. I go weekly and make my purchases. One loaf of the Honey Whole Wheat lasts about a week.
They have a calendar that they give out to patrons that shows the breads that will be made each month, and which breads will be available on specific days. I keep it on the fridge and scheme which bread will be coming home with me each week. The calendars aren't the only things that they give out. When you walk into the bakery you're cheerfully greeted and asked if you would like to try a free sample of their fresh bread. Imagine the surprise on a first timer's face when they are handed an entire slice of bread! I am not exaggerating on this, they cut a full slice for you to sample.
Prices are average for a large loaf of bakery fresh bread. About $4.00 for sandwich breads and slightly more for dessert type breads. It is worth every penny when you try that first slice (on them). They also give back to the community with charitable contributions earned from their "Baker for a Day" program. Which shows that they not only care about the bread they bake, but the people who will eat it.

Leonardo's Pizza -- Burlington, Vermont
After having one of Leonardo's Pizzas delivered to your home, you'll never (willingly) want chain-store pizza again, never. Delivery is free and large and medium pizzas cost $12 and $9.50 respectively, go with the large, toppings add $1.25 each for medium and $1.50 each for large. You pay for quality, what can I say. Leonardo's also offers boutique pizzas like "Meat Lover's Revenge" for the carnivore in your family (pepperoni, sausage, ground beef and baked ham), or if your feeling exotic try the Hawaiian Island Delight (which actually has more meat than the revenge, but balances (or tries to anyway) the cholesterol off with broccoli and pineapple, and vegetarian favorites like Gorgonzola Gourmet (Gorgonzola cheese, olive oil, freshly chopped garlic, spinach, artichoke hearts, and plum tomatoes, these specialties will cost you $16 for large and $13 for medium, again my advice, spend the extra three bucks and go large. Leonardo's also offers two choices for crusts, whole wheat or white. I don't think I've ever ordered a pizza from Leonardo's without getting whole wheat crust, if that tells you anything. Leonardo's will cost you more than whatever "deal" or "gimmick" a chain-store pizza place may be running, but you'll taste the difference and you'll never go back.

Uncommon Grounds -- Burlington, Vermont
At Uncommon Grounds on Church Street coffee is the star. Buck those trendy corporate coffee shops and cross over to where the locals get their first, second, and third cup, Uncommon Grounds. This is coffee nirvana, no tricks or gimmicks here just great tasting gourmet coffee. Not a coffee junkie, but still needing that pick-me-up in the afternoon? No problem. Order the house. If you're in the know, go with the pea berry or any of the other exotic coffees listed on the daily specials. If coffee's not your thing, Uncommon Grounds also serves tea, Italian sodas, and lemonade and iced coffee (in season) -- the ice coffee is just that ice and coffee no need to add half of gallon of cream and a pound of sugar to make it taste good, it already taste good. The staff is friendly, helpful, and well-caffinated, even the longest lines move through quickly. Desserts and pastries are also for sale. Sit down (if you can find a seat -- it's always busy) inside or people watch at the bistro tables outside (weather permitting). When you're in Burlington, get Uncommon!

Red Onion -- Church Street, Burlington
I know that you can get the full range of deli sandwiches at the Red Onion Bakery, but I've only ever gotten one because frankly there is no reason to order anything else other than, the Red Onion sandwich. Real turkey, red onions, a soft cheese (could be a gruyere, but I'm not positive ) and thousand Island dressing on toasted marble rye and served warm. Oh my! It is perfection, food of the gods no doubt. Something this good costs, however, and the last time I indulged in a Red Onion (plus a drink), I don't remember getting a lot of change back from $10. There are get sandwiches and great places to get a sandwich on Church Street, but the Red Onion is in a league of its own. There is an on-site bakery as well, but take a ride over to "Great Harvest" if you want the best bakery in town (see my review). Red Onion also serves desserts, I'm partial to their outstretched-palm-sized "snikerdoodle" cookies, but the brownies are a safe bet too. You can take your Red Onion away and eat it in the comfort of your own home/desk/whatever or you can eat-in. The decor is best described as funky(funkier if school is in session) and eclectic with art from local artists covering the walls.

I grew up in this area. Whenever I go back to visit I try to get up here to eat. This is one of my favorite restaurants. Not only is the menu selection good but the food is wonderful. The restaurant is located right on the beautiful Lake Champlain.

Have never been anything but happy at this Trattoria. Have had meals here during Christmas and in July. One caveat, they only serve wine. Pastas are sublime, veal is perfect. Choices abound.
Head there for a special meal in Burlington.
Pros: Romantic, warm and cozy in the winter
Cons: none
