Mills Peninsula has the worst billing deparment I have ever encountered. They do not itemize and you never know what your paying for, and you can't get any satifiaction from the staff. This last incident takes the cake. My husband had hernia surgery at Mills in November of 2005. Knowing that we would be recieving a bill, we decided to put off other medical procedures in order to save our flexible spending dollars to pay Mills. We received copies of several notices from our insurance company requesting additional information from Mills. We finally recieved the bill in September of 2006, 11 months after the surgery! Needless to say, we lost our flexible spending dollars. When we received the bill, I wrote to Mills asking why it would take 11 months to get a bill, I also enclosed a partial payment. I wrote two more letters requesting an explanation and sent two more partial payments. I finally received a letter from Mills, stating that it was our insurance company that was the problem. I wrote again, asking them to supply supporting documentation and I would take it up with the insurance company, again I enclosed a check. I have had no response, other than Mills turned the bill over to collection in January of 2007, four months after sending the bill and even though I had been making payments. J&L ( the collection agency) then wanted to charge interest going back to the date of the surgery! ( a supervisor did wave this). I ended up having to put this on a credit card to avoid a black mark on our credit. Please note that all other services for this surgery were billed, reviewed and paid in a timely fashion - it was only Mills that we had a problem with. If you are with Mills -- beware - and good luck.
Pros: Hospital Staff is fine
Cons: Billing Department is a nightmare

Mills-Peninsula is extremely intolerant of YOUR billing problems, but like the previous poster said, they do not itemize their invoices. I had one very routine test of peeing in a cup and a little thing of b l o o d taken cost over $800. I was in an out in under 15 minutes, and their unitemized bill was $798.
Mills-Peninsula routinely sends items out to a collection firm, J & L Teamworks. within 60 days of "non-payment." They even list their collection agency in their annual report:
www.mills-peninsula.o r g/about/pdf/2004annualreport.pdf
(Sorry --- you will have to fix the URL because this system does not let me put in words like " b l o o d" or
"o r g"
Even if you have insurance, and you have amounts remaining to be paid, Mills-Peninsula is an aggressive collector of "non-payment."
After having had an unlisted phone number, I changed it anyway because Mills-Peninsula WILL give out your phone number to their collection agency. So much for patient privacy.
Mills-Peninsula seems to be a lower-class hospital employing such tactics. Shame on them.

It's unfortunate I have to leave my doctor to avoid Mills-Peninsula. They've made too many billing mistakes. Previously, I was billed for someone else's lab work. This latest incident, I inquired why this years bill for lab work Ive had annually was significantly more. I had to talk to 3 customer reps before I was told I was billed twice for one item. What was infuriating was they insinuated I was requesting some unfair reduction in my bill when all I wanted was to be billed correctly! Their insult was sleezy and surprising coming from a large firm. Their mistakes totaled close to $1000. What's distrubing is that because they don't itemize their bills, you have no idea what you're paying for and I have no idea what additional mistakes they may have made and that I unknowingly overpaid. If you must use their services, check your bills carefully!!
Pros: Good doctors
Cons: Billing mistakes
