The food here is always great. It's great to come with the family. It keeps everyone entertained. It's not the type of place to stay and linger though. They are on a timed schedule (like Benihanas). They get your whole table seated, fed and then you leave so the next group could use the table. We've never had a problem using the coupon and have been using a coupon for over 10 years now. Like others have said, the host/hostesses are not always the friendliest but the waitresses have always been friendly and the food great.

We love Karuta's Restaurant in Buena Park! the hosts are not always the friendliest but the food's great and the entertainment is fun. They have 2 for 1 coupons in The Register and LA Times. As for the previous reviewer who said they told them to wait outside because her whole party wasn't there yet, Karutas (as well as Benny Hanas) works on a different schedule than other restaurants. The food is cooked and is timed so everyone at your table starts at the same time, then finishes at the same time. The whole thing takes about an hour, then you leave and a new group takes your place. It's not like other restaurants where you could linger.

We didn't eat there because the person at the counter, J. Jo, refused to accept the coupon we have (buy one and get one free). He only wanted to give us 20% off even after reading the coupon for one minute. He was very rude and said "You want to eat or not?", "Have a nice night, please leave".
I believe they used the Entertainment to lure customers and then refuse to honor the discount. Probably most of the customers will accept the 20% instead of leaving the place.

Don't waste your time or money ! I wanted to throw my boyfriend a suprise party for him with thirteen other guests including his 70 year old parents and his 4 week old nephew. We requested to the waitress if we could have the cook wait for fifteen minutes for the rest of our group to join us and she said no problem. After fifteen minutes the manager by the name of Jay Jo comes out and says that we are not allowed to make decisions on when the cook will come out and we will have to wait out side, or leave. I asked the manager why he was so upset since his waitress didn't say that it was not ok. His response was if you people dont like it then you can leave and go somewhere else. The whole table was just stunned at what they were hearing and on top of that Jay Jo says that restaurant is not made for people to take their time at their own leisure. This is how it works for them. Paying customers are like cattle and are rushed through some eating contest with food that is not good at all and they make it known that they do not care one bit about customer service what so ever. This has been my worst dining experience ever not to mention the manager and staff completely ruined the whole surprise party.

Karuta is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. It is just like Benihana's in that they cook the food at your table. If you get one of their 'buy one get one free' coupons from the newspaper you'll be set, and it will be a lot cheaper. The food is great and the entertainment is great!

Karutas is like Benihana's but at a better price. I love this place. First off, every Friday in the same section of the newspaper that lists the movies, you will find a two for one coupon~thats a nice savings as their dinners run between $17-$30. (also check your Entertainment book, if you have one.)If you aren't familiar with this type of restaurant, they cook your meal in front of you. You start off with soup and salad, then your choice of plain, fried or seasoned rice. While you are eating this, they are cooking your order for you. I always get the shrimp/New York steak combo. Along with it, they cook vegetables. You sit at a big table with other people...its a fun environment. They also have a sushi bar, but I am not a sushi person, so I cant comment on that aspect of this restaurant. They get pretty busy, especially on weekends and the parking there is not very good. I prefer to go in the early evening. Oh, and always call and make reservations to save on the wait!
