small world story #305 - this shop is owned and run by suzanne bagdade - we were in the same high school carpool. even if that weren't the case, this would still be a great little boite. suzanne finds and/or commissions stylish fabrics and makes up pillows, handbags and other accessories to her own design. she also stocks my wife's favorite t-shirts - american classics silkscreened with the brooklyn area code. it's down at the far end of smith street, but there are plenty of other hip little shops and restaurants to peek into along the way, so getting there is no hardship. worth a visit!

Once upon a time Brooklyn was full of breweries, then they left, and in the 90s the Brooklyn Brewery emerged. You can visit for happy hour on Friday night or during Saturday day, and on Saturday there are free afternoon tours on the hour, ending with free samples. To get beer, you buy tokens from the cashier near the entrance, then get on line. (It's a good idea to tip the beer bartender.) Once I was with a group and we wanted to go on the tour, but it had been canceled--so they gave us each two free tokens! It's a great way to sample the variety of beers. Just make sure you don't take the beer outside--you could get busted.

well, as a fan of salmon, Nanatori is one of the few local places where you can get spicy salmon rolls. sushi is always excellent, very well-priced for the quality. I highly recommend if you're in the Heights. Also, Lichee Nut is their sister Chinese restaurant, also with good food.

I took several items of (women's) clothing to One Stop. 2 suits, one vintage shirt and 3 pairs of pants that needed to be hemmed and taken in.
He ruined my clothing. The vintage shirt, that I've held on to for over a decade with hopes of finding a trusted tailor - is now not wearable.
He made my pants too small and too short. Of course, a tailor will not refund you, they attempt to cast blame onto the customer.
Mediocre to terrible is the rating I would give Victor at One Stop at 466 Court Street in Carroll Gardens Brooklyn.

Simply the best mozzarella you can buy in the city. Made fresh by the same guy that opened the place years ago; time it right and your mozzarel's still warm. The other meats and cheeses (typical specialty deli variety with Italian emphasis) are also good, and there are some relatively hard-to-find items, such as blood red orange juice.

Fred is my trumpet teacher & has been teaching brass (trombone,trumpet,french horn,tuba) for more than 40 years. He's great with fundamentals, teaching you the details of physical technique, so you don't start with bad or even physically dangerous habits. But he's also the teacher of many people who are now professionals (people in the Philharmonic, or composers, or really good hobbists, etc). My trumpet lessons go like this... I play trumpet, he's on either valve or slide tombone. He tells me stories of his old friends, jokes, thoughts, famous or just really interesting people he's known, stories of humanity in between excercises when your chops need to rest. "I'm a great teacher," he says really without boasting, "because I had a great teacher", "the late John Clark"... not to mention all the gigs, his years teaching at Manhattan School of Music, with the Goldman Band, and the Metropolitan Opera, among other things. I love Fred because he's a wonderful person. I'm glad also he's a great teacher.
He's got a focus on all the fundamentals of music. If you're interested in Jazz in particular, he might not teach with the latest techniques. I would think, especially great for a beginner, or a coach if you're already good & just need polishing technique.

Close, but not too close to BAM, so you have a nice walk into brownstone Ft. Greene to impress your date with your knowlege of this charming neighborhood. The food is good, your waiter/ess might have a French accent, and in warmth, you can sit outside next to a non-busy residential street and feel like you are relaxed and have a touch of that sense of magically NY at it's best. It aint cheap, but really not too expensive either, for a date. A study in seduction. Have it in your repetoire.

Hope and Anchor is not only an delicious, unual eatery in Red Hook (easily accesible by the 61 bus that runs down Atlantic), but also a great place for Karaoke.
But first the food. Hope and Anchor has about 6 tables and a bar, so it is really cozy. They serve "upscale" food, which, for this neighborhood, doesn't cost that munch. Vegetarian Pot Pie. Fancy Pierogis. And all sorts of other really YUMMY, large quantity plates.
But the BEST part about H&A is their Karaoke nights, M.C.ed by Kay Sera, a straight-man in drag, who is quite a hoot! So while you eat dinner, thumb through the book, step up and sing! At no extra cost... unless it makes you order any of their delicious pies and cakes.

Just recently tried this place and was impressed by the decor and intimate setting inside. Had 2 great dishes that we ate to the last crumb. Service was good, and we were not rushed out (although I hear it gets crowded earlier in the evening). Great restaurant for a date or dinner out with a friend.

Anyone feeling wanderlust would do well stopping in at this neighborly spot just on the other side of the East River. It'll give you a full glimpse of what it's like to hang out in a local wine bar on the island of Sardinia.
Located on the ground floor of a residential building, D.O.C. intends to be the place for locals ("we close whenever people want to leave, 3, 4 in the morning"), building loyalty with an extensive wine list that can be bought by the demi-tasse, glass, carafe, or bottle. Accompanying the wines is a simple but thoughtful menu of Sardinian bar food. You'll find regional favorites such as salty, crispy flat bread (made expressly for shepherds who herded sheep for months at a time); artisanal sheep and goat's milk cheeses, and a "chocolate sausage" dessert that is sure to make even Mario Batali drool.
