This park makes you feel like you're in Florida (or at least it makes this girl, who's spent about 10 days total of her life in Florida, feel as if she's in Florida). It juts right out into the New York Harbor, so it smells salty and sounds wave-y. There are a few benches and a lovely walkway lined with flowers, plus a nice patch of grass to spread out and picnic on. The Waterfront Museum, a floating barge with a circus show every Sunday, uses this pier as its home port. On Sundays you'll also find ... the Schnäck cart! Hot dogs, grilled corn, and even tofu skewers from everyone's favorite faux-German burger joint. And best of all, the whole park is surprisingly vacant. Even on weekends, there's usually plenty of space.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden can seem as if it's never crowded. If you avoid the cherry blossoms and the roses blooming - prime visitation times - this urban oasis is as serene as a private garden inhabited only by locals and intrepid tourists willing to travel "all the way to Brooklyn". Each season brings new wonders and there's always more to explore. Summer is lush, autumn is vivid and Spring has it's obvious beauty. But for me, the dead of winter, branches bare against a gray sky, snow covering the cherry esplanade, has a vastly more satisfying, uncommon beauty. Chilled to the bone, you can seek dry warmth in the desert garden or the damp pleasures of the jungle habitat at the Steinhardt Conservatory.

The Jewish Children's Museum opened recently in Brooklyn, New York. They have outstanding exhibits that children, and even adults of all ages can enjoy immensely. They feature many hands on sites, as well as some temporary exhibits. Right now their temporary exhibit is called "exodous" and teaches about the Jews' travels out of Egypt. Their staff is very competent, professional, and well versed. I've seen them reviewed in a number of news papers, and have yet to see someone with a bad word about them. I'd give them a 10/10 rating!

My favorite beach in NY is practically right in my backyard-Coney Island! I have gone here all my life and for a while about 20 years ago, I would say it wasn't a very safe place to go anymore. However, it has undergone a revival in recent years. The area is very nice and safe now and the beach is cleaner than ever.
When you get sick of lying on the sand, only steps away is the New York Aquarium where you can see every type of fish and even sea lion shows. Take in a Cyclone baseball game at Keyspan Park. Take the kids on some kiddie rides at Deno's park or Astroland Park, all right on the boardwalk. Right down the street is Nathan's Famous, which has the BEST hot dogs.
I really don't know any other beach that has so much to do. It's also very easy to get to via either bus or subway. Coney Island is the best!

Co-owned by two really nice cool people, KCDC stands for Kings County Degenerates Company or Community or something. Skaters all over the USA have heard of this Brooklyn skateshop. It just moved within Williamsburg to a lofty space on the industrial sidestreet N. 10th, next to thrift store Beacon's Closet. Last time I went in, I got brand new samples of Van's on sale for practically nothing. Selection is decent. As for service, I can see them being annoyed with a tourist who knows nothing, but they'd at least be impressed you had enough sense to end up there instead of a Blades in the mall.
PROS: Really cool
CONS: Off the beaten path

The Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Museum was one of the most sublime displays I've seen. Celebrating Japanese poetry and philosophy, the festival delivers demonstrations from Martial Arts masters, poets, and artists as well as hundreds of cherry trees in full blossom.
Pros: Beatiful festival, demonstrations, and cherry blossoms
Cons: Parking

I never knew such a beautiful art gallery existed in Brooklyn until I visited last week. They have mostly Jewish art but their masterpieces are breathtaking. Their paintings are very rich in color but are mostly from artists I have never heard of. The owner is really friendly and willing to spend time with you.
