I've been coming here for about 10 years and it was definitely better when I first started coming here.
The selection is worse for one: at one point the store was the size of about 6 storefronts. I would say it's down to about 4 now.
But I would say the biggest problem is that 1/2 the store is locked away in cases of one kind or another--screws, tools, all the plumbing supplies--and the staff basically shuttles from case to case unlocking them with an exasperated look on their faces.
As a result as others have noted it's really hard to get someone's attention.
It's still the best place in the neighborhood to buy paint, but I try to get other stuff elsewhere.
Pros: good vibe
Cons: long waits for service

I've been shopping at Pintchik since 1995 and I'm now putting together my fourth apartment with their help. Though it usually takes a minute or two to find a salesperson to ask a question, once I do they spend as much time as I need to tell me whatever it is I need to know, from mounting shelves on dry wall to what kind of paint to get.
Pros: Great advice
Cons: It takes a minute or two to find someone to help

While I appreciate the 'down home' atmosphere of this old-school hardware store, my experience was a bit lackluster. It is frustrating to get back home and find that they gave you the wrong items, then have to head back to explain it to several people before getting the right answers and the right products. The prices are a bit on the steep side as well, although it's easier to buy here than at say Home Depot based on size alone. I'd be okay with the prices if the service were better.
Pros: Convenient (other than hours of operation)
Cons: Staff overwhelmed or underprepared, bad reccomendations, pricy

the glowing reviews here are shills. look at the commentors' review history, many many of the 5 star givers only have one review, and its for Pintchik. Really? when were you so inspired by a hardware store that you signed up for an account to post just that review?
Let this be proof that this place is dishonest, on top of overpriced and HORRIBLE service. Only once was I treated nicely, otherwise you'll be made to feel like you're not worth their time.
Pros: close to my house
Cons: poor customer service, prices, they write their own glowing reviews

I live not to far away from Pintchik and I go there when I think of it. This hardware store has the potential to be a go to resource if they would get their act together. Considering Home Depot is either, in Coney Island, Fort Hamilton Parkway, or 23 Street in Manhattan, they could make good money. Maybe they make their money with the landlords of the surrounding buildings or their window treatments and contracts etc. and the regular customer is not that important. As far as service is concerned, they are the pits, (which is par for the course for most stores in the city.) If you know exactly what you want, you can go right to the shelf and pick it up, (someone usually tells you it's 'over there' as they point off into space - don't you just hate that?) Don't ask for advice, because most of the time they don't know and even if you bring in specifics, or a picture, they are just as lost as polar bear in a snow storm. The sales clerks are just there, so there is no need to bother them as they talk to each other and not the customer. (Sort of like J&R Music World.) Price wise, it's good considering going anywhere else will cost you train fare, gas and time. My only hope is that they read these reviews and take them to heart to know their products base, serve the customer and at least 'act' they like their work. The store has great potential and intention but as you know, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. -The best to you Pintchick!PJ

I walked past three other hardware stores the other day to get to Pintchik, because I knew they wouldn't treat me like a dumb blond. A really nice guy (he wouldn't tell me his name..."there's no 'I' in team" he says...) helped me find the right sized screws to replace the ones that my cat stole from me so I could re-mount my wall sconce, and then gave me the screws for free. And when I couldn't get my kitchen faucet apart to install a water filter several months back, another staff member assured me it came apart and sold me a 7$ wrench to do the job instead of trying to sell me a whole new faucet. They are awesome there, and I find what I'm looking for 95% of the time. I'm glad I live nearby!

I've been using Pintchik Hardware since I built out an artist's loft in the neighborhood in June 2000. It's a nice comfortable size between a giant Home Depot warehouse and a bodega hardware store. You can get everything from traditional hardware, plumbing, and painting supplies, to a decent selection of home furnishings; I rented a full wood floor refinishing sander from them (although I don't know if they still have it) and anything that didn't come from a contractor supply company (like the 100 sheets of drywall and the water heater) came from Pintchik. They have almost everything you need, but you can still get in and get out in a reasonable amount of time.
The service at the store is great; sometimes the store is crowded and very busy, but most of the staff has been there since I've been going, and they've always been pleasant, helpful, and knowledgeable, even when they've got 5 people asking them questions. I've found that the owner, Matt Pintchik, will bend over backwards to help anyone who comes into his store (or even people just walking by it), and seems to wish that he could help every customer individually. I wish I had this kind of neighborhood hardware store near my new apartment.
