i've been in and out of roy's service dept for 15 years now, and never had anything to complain about - the guys and girls working there know what they're doing and are willing to go the exta few steps to help in any way they can. i try to take care of most of my bike maintenance myself, however when a job is outside my expertise, this is the only place in brooklyn i would trust it to - riding the busy streets of brooklyn and manhattan i can't afford to have something critical on the bike malfunction in the wrong place at the wrong time.
i never bought a bike from them, so i can't rate the sales portion of the shop.

This bike shop mainly does repairs. I'm not sure if they actually sell bikes, maybe used ones, but definitely not new ones. They guy who runs it is pretty nice and he knows how to fix bikes. One time my friend brought his wheel in to get rebuilt and the guy was going to rebuild it, but then he never did. he gave my friend a loaner wheel, but since he never rebuilt the other wheel, my friend just ended up keeping the loaner. It all worked out in the end.

The sales people were very knowledgeable and helpful to me when I came to buy a bird. They sold me all the correct supplies I needed without trying to rip me off by selling unnecessary stuff. I tried 2 different PetCos before trying this store and the PetCos were a complete disappointment and this store had an excellent selection of birds. The bird I bought is healthy and have not had any trouble with the supplies. I've been to at least 10 other pet stores and so far this was the best one.

Store may look small on the outside but reality its big and there are tons of things to look at and buy. So don't hesitate to stop in and get yourself that little extra thing for the special instrument.

If you need an amp or guitar fixed or upgraded, this would be a good place to go. If you are looking for, say, a used or new Jaguar Fender, they'll want too much for one that will need massive body work. The staff is helpful, although they come with the requisite guitar-salesperson-conceit. Just make sure to check your prices against those of Guitar Center.

The Pourhouse has the best aspects of a dive bar, but the recent renovations have given it a new sheen. It's a laid back place with cheap drinks (and you have to be a real jerk not to get your buy-back), a nicely varied jukebox, a pool table (and pool league team, and a softball team), a pinball machine, and a whole cast of "regulars" that you can join pretty quickly if the place takes your fancy. A rotating display of local artwork adorns the walls (stop in and talk to the bartender if you'd like to show yours), and there's a back room for bands (drop off a demo if you'd like to play there), Sunday night movie screenings (often horror films) or just lounging on the sofas to talk to friends. Stop in once and the bartender will be friendly and chat with you, stop in again and he or she will probably remember what you drink (all of them are top notch).
Recent addition: Free hot dog with any drink.

Reel Life is the real deal-- a wild collection of every kind of film for people who really love cinema.
Sure it hards to navigate, sometimes requiring Twister-like feats to pass fellow browsers in the narrow, creaking aisles. The filing system is somewhat archaic and the number of titles relatively finite, forcing us all to bring back movies the next day!
But Reel is a mass of great film: blockbusters and indies, foreign and Hollywood, rare and run of the mill, kitschy and haunting, something for all tastes. There's cult stuff you've never heard of and bootlegs and pornos that no megastore would ever dare to stock. It's place where VHS and DVD share their glory.
There are Reel Life's in both Park Slope and Williamsburg.

I haven't purchased one of the home grown bikes that they offer at the shop but I have availed myself of their repair services a number of times. The last time I stopped in I had my handlbars replaced which was done within an hour and for a very reasonable price ($10-15 labor) so I've been generally pleased with the service and attitude of the shop.
As I mentioned, the shop specializes in their own home-brew bicycles so the only name brand they sell is Redline and their 9-2-5 model. Otherwise, they offer a fairly nice selection of bikes which can be built to your specifications for well under $1000. Check them out at nycbikes.com
