We took one of the evening tours. Our tour guide, Lee, was fantastic. A great mix of poetry, music and tour commentary was an awesome combination with the comfortable boats and the amazing New York City Skyline. I have also taken the free service to IKEA and found the staff as friendly and helfpful as this experience.
Pros: Friendly staff, great boats, great tour
Cons: none

If ever in New York, be sure to take the water taxi. A person can get a scenic view of the traditional New York skyline while traveling on the Hudson River.

Dont expect the staff to be of much help if you use the hop on hop off service. It's not a tour service, It's not commentated and the staff is more concerned about complaining about their jobs than helping the customers who paid good money for the service. It does beat the car traffic of New York but get a map and know which stop to take. Dont expect to ride on the top and sight see.....only a limited number of people are allowed up top and there will be a waiting list. The desk opens at 11:00am but the first tour doesn't go out of Battery Park until 11:50am....a little detail some may have missed. The hop on hop off does NOT include the 1 hour tour. That would be extra. I was really disappointed in the service provided.
Pros: Beats the car traffic
Cons: staff is less than helpful. Starts too late in the day to be of good use.

We have found that when the weather is nice the water taxi is a fun summer option. Our visitors get to see midtown, Chelsea, the village, downtown, the Statue, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Its a view that you are not going to get from a subway.
But even when its just me and my wife, weve found that the water taxi can make for an enjoyable afternoon. One Sunday we started at the Seaport and went to the Fulton Ferry stop. We ate brunch at Bubbys then had some delicious peaches and cream ice cream at the ice cream shop right near the ferry stop. Then we jumped back on the ferry and went to the Chelsea Piers, where we had frozen daiquiris at that Frying Pan. That day they had a live Brazilian percussion band, which played as the massive Norwegian Dawn cruise ship sailed out to sea.
Pros: nice views

I would NOT recommend this to anyone. The first boat was 15min late, then after arriving at the new water taxi beach (which was nowhere near as great as the write ups will lead you to believe) my friends and I were stranded there because the taxis ran completely off schedule. I specifically asked the water taxi attendant when the next boat would arrive and she offered me the schedule and stated that the boat would arrive as indicated in 45min. Well, apparently it showed up 20min early and the employees made no effort to inform patrons that this boat was operating off schedule. After learning that we'd missed the boat, the employees were incredibly un-helpful and refused to refund us our money even though we'd paid $20 for the 2 day pass. I even demanded to speak with a manager over the phone who was equally rude and unhelpful.
Cons: reliability, customer service

This is a great way to get out of the hustle of the streets for a while. Nothing better for getting rid of your stress than being on the top deck in the sunshine looking at the manhattan skyline.

I love these little yellow boats! It's like taking a vacation without leaving the city. Incredible value -- for only $20 you can hop on and off for 2 days all over the city. We took the Gateway to America Harbor tour last fall, and learned the history of the city from a harbor perspective. I can't wait until my family visits from the Midwest so I can take them on the tour this Spring. A DEFINITE MUST DO!
