Casual wild game place in Brooklyn Heights. This unpretentious place don't have much in terms of atmosphere, but the wait staff are very friendly, and the menu is pretty special. The regular menu has some outstanding duck dishes (my favorite)... As great as duck is, it is very rare that you see a non-Asian restaurant really know what to do with this succulent bird. I mean, the French use it well in cassoulet & as a detail in other dishes. On good day, other restaurants may make some good but overly refined version of this bird, but usually in tiny portions. Henry's End gives you a nice large piece of duck, and fearlessly goes for it. It's not just big, it's yummy! Otherwise, this place specializes in wild game, so you'll always find something unexpected an interesting on the specials. Worth the trip. Take a walk on the Promenade afterward, if you're looking for an after dinner constitutional.

Hope and Anchor is not only an delicious, unual eatery in Red Hook (easily accesible by the 61 bus that runs down Atlantic), but also a great place for Karaoke.

But first the food. Hope and Anchor has about 6 tables and a bar, so it is really cozy. They serve "upscale" food, which, for this neighborhood, doesn't cost that munch. Vegetarian Pot Pie. Fancy Pierogis. And all sorts of other really YUMMY, large quantity plates.

But the BEST part about H&A is their Karaoke nights, M.C.ed by Kay Sera, a straight-man in drag, who is quite a hoot! So while you eat dinner, thumb through the book, step up and sing! At no extra cost... unless it makes you order any of their delicious pies and cakes.

The ambience is straight out of Southern Italy (so I'm told) and the coffee itself must come from heaven :). Sarah and Joe, long time neighborhood residents and owners of Cafe Capri make coffee preparation an art, and it shows. They will ask you a whole list of questions, form what kind of milk to what kind of topping to whether you want the lid flap opened or closed - but I usually just tell them to make it the way they think is best and they have yet to lead me astray.
Seating is about 5 little cafe tables and chairs (one or two of which make their way outside in nice weather) and is often at least partially occupied by neighbors who have come to socialize of just read the paper.
Shelves along the wall bear an assortment of impressive Italian treats and coffee making tools, while the counter is piled high with fresh pastries and individually wrapped candies.
Extra bonus: the iced coffee is served over more frozen coffee instead of ice cubes, so it never gets watery and you always get your money's worth.

The only thing you have to know when you walk into the Bedford Cheese Shop is that you want to buy some cheese, the friendly, non-pretentious staff will help you with the rest. And these people really know their cheese!
The selection itself ranges from your basic $2.99 a pound cheddar to $40 a pound delicacies, and many of them are already labelled with staff reviews, some along the lines of "This tastes great with PBR!".
If you know generally what you're looking for the staff can help you fine tune your fondue, or you can start from scratch. Tell them that you're cooking lamb, they'll ask you how and with what spices, and help you choose a cheese that will compliment it. And you won't be allowed to pull out your wallet until you've tasted your selection (plus a few others!)
If you're boardering on dairy dependency, you might want to leave your charge card at home - it's easy to walk out with $50 worth of cheese!

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn. This Middle Eastern restaurant has amazing food for good prices. If you go you should definitely ask for outdoor seating, because at the back of the restaurant, there is an outdoor garden area with flowers and waterfalls where you can sit down and eat. Dishes you definitely should not miss, include the hummus, which comes with free hot, fresh baked bread, grilled chicken kebobs, rice pilaf, and baklava for dessert. This is one dining experience you don't want to miss.

Known locally as "Cho's", this deli is a far cry from just soda, beer and pre-packaged snack cakes. In fact, at the moment I can't remember ever seeing a Twinkie in the place. Instead, Cho's stocks an array of health food - from fresh vegetables to cheeses to organic wheat free/sugar free/dairy free/low fat cookies and tofu dogs. There's also a deli for sandwiches, which hovers above the refrigerator case filled daily with fresh Sushi. Oh, and there are flowers outside. And frozen dinners and other foods (again, with lots of vegetarian and health food options) in the back. And about 4 times more ice cream than most delis. And come to think of it, I think there is one rack of Hostess concoctions in the back.
Add to that that the guy working in the morning says hello the minute you walk in the door, and starts making my coffee the minute I get there, even though I've only been going regularly in the morning for a week or two.
Super duper extra bonus: it's open 24 hours

More
Red Hook may not have a subway station or edible produce, but it does have a surprising number of superb neighborhood bars. Of them all, I find Bait & Tackle to be the most glorious for the following reasons:
1. The decor includes a taxidermied bear, an old door used as a table, and an astounding number of baits and tackles (left over from its previous incarnation, I'm guessing).
2. Every other Tuesday there's a pub quiz that's way more laid-back and fun than some other, more bloodthirsty, bar trivia contests.
3. Big Buck Hunter can be found in many bars, but where else can you pretend to be a trashy New England fisherman reeling in giant cod while a disembodied voice yells helpful instructions such as, "Turn the rod left! Turn the rod down!"? Only in Bait & Tackle's arcade-sized version of Sega Bass Fishing, that's where.
4. Patrons bring their dogs here. And not nippy little dogs. Big, manly, weathered bar dogs.
5. Bar snacks: both a delicious mini-pretzel/cheddar-Goldfish mix AND Swedish Fish.
6. On Sunday afternoons, two-for-one bloody marys so good they make you see through time.

More
Park Plaza is a real diner. I'm not talking cute, retro little train car full of '50's kitsch and a stainless steel bar. I mean the kind of diner you might find on a road trip. Next to a strip mall. In Idaho.
First of all, it's about 10 times the size that any diner in New York has right to be; it's so big that even a party of two usually gets seated at a booth for six. It also overlooks Cadman Plaza, a nice big generic park. And then there are the $3 daiquiris, with a sugar-liquor proportion that would do any tightwad bar owner proud. Mood music? Not so much, unless you want to plug a dollar into the computerized jukebox at your, and every, table. Are the lights dimmed at night? Of course not! How then would customers see the Brooklyn Bridge wall murals and carefully curated collection of framed plates?
For some reason, Park Plaza isn't as popular as the frou-frou cafés and bistros nearby, but fine. More complimentary pickles and giganto burgers for you and the geriatric locals dining alone to enjoy. And remember to finish off with a mammoth piece of cake from the pastry shelf up front, if you can stuff one in. You can even get one of those big squares of carrot cake decorated with an icing carrot.

From word of mouth I discovered this place and from the comments of the food and service, my expectations were raised. Regardless, I was still surprised by the high quality service and the mouth watering food that was presented to me. The wait staff were friendly and very helpful and despite the fact that every table was filled, our food arrived very quickly. As the belly dancer captivated the diners, we were treated to the most amazing Moroccan meal we'd ever tasted. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the Tagine of Mixed Seafood with spices that tantalized her tongue, I enjoyed the Coucous Royale which raised the bar for what excellent Moroccan food is. With the food, service and entertainment of Les Babouches as high as it is, it's easy to forget the decor which deserves high marks as well! Moroccan artifacts and, of course, babouches, are tastefully shown on the walls. Soft Moroccan pillows line the exterior benches that you can rest on as you dine. If you're looking for true Moroccan food without the trouble of catching a flight, this place will satisfy all those needs.
