I've been going to Urban for the past four years and while the business part seems a bit disorganized - the shop hadn't really entered the computer age last time I was there - the people are friendly and Adam (the doctor) knows how to fit the right contact. Even better, he'll explain *why* he thinks that particular contact is the right choice for you and do his best to offer you a fair price.
Pros: Friendly, personable service
Cons: The business part seems a bit disorganized

Unprofessional and irresponsible. I experienced the same things as most of the other reviewers. Forgetting to order contacts until you call to find out where they are, ordering the wrong prescription. This place is a mess, and frankly I'm shocked to see them in business. Take your money elsewhere. Support local Brooklyn businesses, but take a pass on this one.

For someone who doesn't have a lot of free time, this is not the place for you. I went to Urban Optical last summer to get a check-up and new contacts/glasses. I originally saw Adam (who took a personal call on his cell phone during my exam) and he ordered the wrong contacts for me 3 times. I went back a forth time to see a different Dr and finally got the correct perscription...however it took two tries to get the order correct. My time is valuable to me and so are my eyes. I will never be going back to this place and I don't recommend you do either.
Pros: location
Cons: every part of the service.

Urban Optical is a good place to find stylish frames, but I'm not a fan of the service. The clerks are all good, but Dr. Friedland is always in a rush. I'm light sensitive and always have a difficult time getting my eyes dilated and having the light shined in. Dr. Friedland gave up on giving me my exam - meaning that I have to wait a full year for my insurance to cover having the health of my eyes checked. I've never had a doctor "give up." Most are patient and work with you to accomplish the task at hand. He also made me come back three times because he kept on running out of time for my appointment.
He gave me a good contact lens prescription, and I'm happy with the frame selection, but now that I have my stylish frames, I'm never going back. The eye exam is too important to miss!
Pros: stylish frames, fair prices, good clerks
Cons: poor service by the doctor

The service was perfect. I walked in and felt no pressure to buy anything in the store even though I must have tried on 50 pairs of glasses. The staff let me do my thing until I asked for help at which point they were VERY helpful. Good selection in styles and price. I'll definitely go there for my next pair of glasses (and I'm very picky).
Pros: great staff, good selection
Cons: in park slope

I've gotten my glasses from Urban Optical for nearly 10 years now. The only time I lapsed going to Adam & crew was when I was with my optician girlfriend, who gave me a better break than, frankly, anyone could. Since she's closed her business, I've been back at Urban Optical and can't think of going anywhere else, although I look all over for cool frames. In the event that I find something I might like better elsewhere, I know they'll go the extra mile to order what I want, or find something that will meet my needs.
I also have various needs with frames: progressive lenses, strong prescription and a super small bridge means that I'm not an easy to serve customer. Other places have made me feel that my needs are "too demanding," at Urban Optical, they work with "what is" and satisfy.
They're really great. No need to go anywhere else!

Pros: great service, cool frame selection, they go the extra mile to make sure you're satisfied
Cons: none that I can think of!

They just moved into a bigger space 2 doors down, so the cramped-ness issues are gone. They really pay attention to what they're doing. We dropped off a prescription for my son (exam by a pediatric ophthalmologist), and got a call from Adam the next day. He had noticed something in the order that did not make sense for a child, as well as a discrepancy between the prescription and the measurement they took off my son's existing glasses. It turned out that the existing glasses, from a different optician, were wrong. On top of that, that we had been receiving (from a couple of different opticians over the years) a type of lens that while it did technically fill the prescription, was not ideal in the circumstance. We followed his recommendations, saved money, and have a son who is thrilled to be able to see much better than he has in a long time. I have gone back for my own, and have been similarly impressed with the fact that they truly care about what they are doing.

I went here the first time because they are just a block from my house and accept the vision insurance I have. Adam is a wonderful eye-doctor, if a bit of a character (in a good way!), and I have been back several times since. He's always looking for a way to save his customers money--a big plus these days!
