The Boulder Cork is not your typical Boulder restaurant.
There were no beautiful people (except, perhaps, us).
No one was wearing biking gear.
Instead, there was a three generation family next to us, (quietly) celebrating grandma's birthday.
We did not have a stunning twentysomething waitress in spandex. Instead, our waiter was over 60 and vaguely reminiscent of Louis Rukeyser.
There was no chrome in the decor.
This is your mama's steak house, and it was really nice for a change.
The service was excellent: we always had what we needed and were never interrupted mid-sentence for the convenience of the staff. The waiter joked lightly with us but not intrusively. Water and bread were plentiful and the check was delivered right around the time we were done eating.
I had the King Salmon special, which was cooked just as ordered and had a very nice fruity glaze, along with a tasty mushroom sauce. The mashed potatoes and broccoli flower were slightly dull, but there was plenty of sauce to perk them up.
I wolfed down the pecan pie, which was lathered in whipped cream and ice cream.
Maureen had a steak, and said it was nicely spiced/flavored as at Outback, but with more tender meat cooked just the way she likes it.
The atmosphere was perfect for Baileys and Coffee, which is what she had for dessert.
We left $105 lighter, including a 20% tip, and pre-dinner cocktails but no wine.
Highly recommended if you want a good meal away from the usual Boulder scene.

The Rio is a staple of the Boulder Pearl Street Mall scene. The food is A+ texmex (nothing fancy - just good stuff). The atmosphere is casual - not to party, not to mellow. The service is fast and the margaritas are huge.

Acqua Pazza is new to the Boulder food scene - one that has always been lacking in high quality Italian food. Acqua Pazza continues this tradition - the food was profoundly mediocre, the restaurant was mostly empty (especially strange for a new place in Boulder), and there was no spirit to the meal. The waitress was nice and helpful, but there was just nothing above average about this place.

I have eaten at Frasca a number of times and it compares favorably with the best restaurants in the country
The chef was just named one of Food & Wine Magazines 10 best new chefs, and it is clear why
The menu is consistantly interesting, the food preparation is great, and the service is top-notch
The wine list is very well done, and has both quality and variety without exorbitant mark-ups
Frasca is clearly the hottest new restaurant to join the Boulder scene in quite a while, and it's a great addition

7 Reviews of The Kitchen in Boulder, CO

Jen
I had been to the kitchen once before and was unimpressed. One of my staff had heard great things about the kitchen, so I agreed to try it one more time. I treated 5 members of my staff to lunch at the kitchen. Two ordered the crab salad. One of them had a few bites and put it aside, the other ate it all and within hours was deathly ill with food poisoning. The other who had only sampled hers ended up with terrible cramps. I can't believe a "premier" restaurant would serve food that could be unsafe. "Oh, it's probably okay for one more day" is not acceptable. Lousy service too.

Hapa has a sparse stainless steel design aesthetic and a small Zen river that flows along the bar. With modern jazz coloring the background, it’s a wonderful atmosphere in which to enjoy copious amounts of sushi, particularly if someone else is picking up the tab. The sushi is delicious and I’ve never had bad service.

More
I'm an investor in Flatiron Athletic Club, so I'm biased. Boulder is a hugely athletic town so there are many great clubs, although almost all of them are now generic national chains. FAC is locally owned (by about 20 high tech and local business people) and run by Keith and Jens - two awesome local entrepreneurs. FAC feels like a local club - lots of non-generic action, the best athletes in town, outstanding trainers that have long tenure, clean and fresh atmosphere - yet not sterile, and continuous small upgrades and changes that are member driver. It's got everything: two pools (indoor and outdoor), weights, treadmill / bikes / spinners, raquetball/squash courts, tennis courts, kids area, yoga, massage, basketball court, and an indoor 1/8th of a mile track (I'm sure I missed something.) It's a "Boulder scene" - everyone is into their workout - don't bother with the spandex - no one is looking at you.

I ate here when the restaurant first opened. I understand now that the aesthetics are the only thing of value to this restaurant. The food was bland and the service was appalling. Le Central in Denver is much better. Everything looked tasty and presentation was good, but flavor was lacking and service was poor. I spoke to a server who said that the management was very poor there and that generally, the waitstaff was treated like "domestics."
Our waitress made a mistake with our order. When we asked for something else, she complied and brought a new dish. However, in the kitchen I could see her manager yelling at her until tears fell from her eyes. He told her how the extra dish was to come out of her own paycheck.
When we asked to speak to the manager he came out and did not offer any kind of compensation or comment of relief. He only pointed towards the waitress and said, "It was her fault," and then walked away. Unbelievable. What kind of accountability is that when you are running the restaurant? Our waitress had red, teary eyes throughout the meal. Absolutely horrible dining experience.

Folks,
I'm picky about what tires i run on my Audi S4 both for performance and safety. i was referred to Tires, Inc. by THE car expert in Boulder, Frank Amoroso, and i have not been disappointed. I find the staff at Tires, Inc. to be knowledgeable, helpful, patient and friendly. They'll work with you to find the right tires for your specific needs and car -- not just sell you crappy tires at the lowest price and send you on your way. They found problems with the mounting and hardware on my car when Discount Tires had put on a set of custom rims i ordered. They also offer wheel and tire storage for your winter set (you should have a separate set of winter tires people!).
I recommend them highly.

L'Atelier's decor reminds me of haute cuisine restaurants in Paris; a little odd, a little hip, clean, crisp.
The food here is always unique and phenomenal. The plates are physically huge which can be annoying sometimes (the waiter has to clear a landing area on the table in front of you), but the food commands your attention anyway.
The wait staff can be a little cold, but I enjoy the consistency. There's nothing I hate more than returning to a restaurant where I enjoyed the service, only to have a negative experience.
On the downside, a few times they've wanted hefty ($150'ish) deposits upon making reservations on busy nights; I'm not investing on margin here... just trying to eat dinner for crying out loud.
The other negative I'd add is that they pack the tables in on busy/holiday nights (e.g. Valentine's day). What is usually a cozy seating, turns into a sardine can which is hardly romantic.
