We went to lunch the other day and ordered the lunch combo which comes with a salad. After some very slow service, we finally got our salad and my friend found a red beetle looking bug in it. We told the server, and she offered free edamame or ice-cream. We didn't want either and we barely touched our meal after the bug made us lose our appetites. We were charged for the full bill. I have never had such poor service after paying so much.

We've been to sushi and Japanese restaurants the world over -- including Japan (of course), and this is one of the best we've experienced anywhere. So, we go to Sushi Zanmai at least once a month. We'd recommend starting with a flask of cold Katana saki, followed by the delicious miso soup and the cold and crisp cucumber - seaweed salad. From there, it is a long list of sushi favorites (depending on taste) and/or sashimi (especially the tuna). The wait staff people are always in a festive mood, yet they understand the traditions of Japanese politeness. So, going to Sushi Zanmai is really a combination of great food, and a Japanese environment that takes one out of the everyday experience.

We had heard that Zanmai was a popular sushi spot and decided to give it a try. After tasting our first few pieces of sushi, we wished we had chosen a different dining destination. Several pieces of sushi had a decidedly fishy taste and nothing that we ate tasted particularly fresh. Our waiter seemed like a college kid waiting tables for the first time. We left much of our order at the table and were left completely perplexed as to why there appeared to be a fair number of regulars at the restaurant. With Sushi Tora nearby, I couldn't see any reason to go here.

This is our favorite sushi place! We live in Berthoud and we drive down to Boulder once a month to have sushi at Sushi Zanmai. The sushi and the service are excellent. Be sure to try the Spider... More

This is our favorite sushi place! We live in Berthoud and we drive down to Boulder once a month to have sushi at Sushi Zanmai. The sushi and the service are excellent. Be sure to try the Spider Roll! On Sundays, some of the sushi is on special at a $1 a piece. On weekends there's a crowd but we've never had to wait too long for a table.
