I had heard great things about this store from a local who explained that one reason she had decided to move to Boulder was because she knew that she would be happy living in a town that could support a store like Peppercorn. After my first shopping trip here, I can understand her excitement.
I stopped in intending to spend about ten minutes or so to pick up a fathers day gift. Over an hour later, I wanted to keep shopping.
These people are merchandising geniuses. They have such an incredbile range of products available for any gourmet or housewares need. For transplants from other towns, they seem to have collected local favorites from around the country - Frog Hollow preserves from San Francisco among them, alongside Fluff (whipped marshmallow) a personal childhood favorite.
The staff at the store was incredibly competent and accessible - rather than having to hunt down someone when I had questions on an item, I quickly had two employees who added their opinion to my search for the perfect electric peppergrinder. Rather than simply pushing the most expensive items which often happens in stores like this, the salespeople were quick to point out the pros/cons of each item.
This is a store where shopping is truly a fun experience.

I heard so much about this store that I had to check it out for myself. If you are new to tow, you should know that the general perception of locals is that if "you can't find it at McGuckin's, it doesn't exist." That's probably pretty close to the truth, for this store seems to have it all. Calling it simply a "hardware store" is a gross under-representation for it not only has every widget and gadget imaginable, it stocks bigger items as well. They even have a kitchen and bath design center on-site.
They boast over 200,000 items and I'm pretty sure that's accurate. And their staff prides themselves on topnotch customer service--they can find anything i this huge place and THEN they can tell you what it's for. The only caution--plan on spending more time than you think when you get there!

This place has lots of character. It's fun to go in and browse. They've got bird baths, pots, potting benches, yard decor, chairs, gardening gloves, shoes - even soaps and candles. It's a store with kind of a whimsical and fun feel. Definitely stop in when you're walking the West End of Pearl Street.

First off, the name is a misnomer. You can buy furniture at this store in all forms: unfinshed and do it yourself, unfinished and have them paint it, or completely finished/painted. I recently bought a BEAUTIFUL completely finished alderwood dresser and mirror there. I'm so happy with it that I'm about to go back and order the bed frame and side tables. They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff and I think their furniture is quite a good bargain - whether finished or unfinished.

I had Tom's clean my carpets when I was expecting my first child because I wanted my house to not only be clean, but to be a safe environment for a newborn. I was really pleased to learn about Tom's. I thought they did a great job. The guys that did the hard work were extremely friendly and quite thorough. Before they finished they lifted the pile on the carpets and it looked brand new! It's definitely more expensive to go this route, but so worth it for your family's health.
