You just can't visit Boulder without visiting the Boulder Bookstore. It's the only game in town. Which is to say that it's one of the best independent bookstores still around that hasn't been squashed or marginalized by the huge corporate big boxes. Boulder Bookstore has three and a half floors of books, a great kids' section, a used shelf, frequent author readings, and an adjacent cafe. The location at the West end of the Pearl Street Mall makes it inescapable. Go there. Read.

Lots of books... textbooks, novels, non fiction... they have a lot of different varieties to choose from. Good find for anyone needing a good read.

You can find your Barne's and Noble's standard titles, as well as local authors. Boulder Book Store also hosts regular readings by locals and traveling authors. If you're looking for a place (that isn't Borders or Barnes & Noble) where you can hang out for hours and try books out before you decide to actually buy them, this is the place to go. Boulder Book Store is an institution in Boulder. It's certainly cramped, but its vertical space leaves lots of room for roaming the many rooms and perusing their sizable used book inventory (used books are shelved alongside new books, so you can make your best choice on the shelves without having to go seeking in a separate section). The service is friendly, and their book talks with local and touring authors is fun (though the popular ones can get very crowded, so arrive early to get a seat). PROS: large selection, will order things that aren't in stock CONS: can get crowded

They also have a great cafe on one side, reading room, and events with authors weekly. The store is always crowded with those from Boulder, and a great place to hangout for all of your book needs.

The Boulder Book Store, located on the west end of the Pearl Street Mall, offers a pretty nice selection of national books (the kind you're gonna find in any bookstore), as well as publications from local authors. I'm not crazy about the store's layout, but they make the most of their space. In addition to books, there's a card/gift section and a nice wall of magazines and journals. The staff at the Boulder Book Store has always been very helpful and courteous.
