Tucked away in a bank building, this gym is alright for women who want to get a break from the office for a quick lunch workout. A lot of the women I work with have memberships here and they are happy with it. When I went to this gym, however, I felt like there was not much to do. There are lunch time classes which is great but some of the instructors are really overbearing and annoying. Staff in the office are pleasant but your not sure if they are just trying to sell you the membership. The machines are the standard machines and can be difficult to get during the busy lunch hour.

More
Women's Fitness of Boston was my "starter gym" - I was terrified of gyms and hated to exercise. My coworker sent me here and it's a winner. Tucked into the basement of the Flatley Building on School Street (across from Borders), it has all the basic machines including treadmills, bikes, weight equipment, and ellipticals. There are classes every day during the week and the locker room is clean, if utilitarian. The guys who took over from the old owners are friendly and committed to keeping the place up - don't be skeptical that they're running a women's gym, they're awesome. The only downside here is that it's open only until 8pm, then until 1pm Saturday and closed Sunday. However, if you're the kind of person who works out before or after work, this will be perfect for you, and the price is usually right too.

Vassar Salon tries to lure in downtown area walk-ins with promotions on the placard often placed in front of the establishment. Patrons should be forwarned this is a no frills salon with lackluster service. The interior is drab and offers no privacy from the passing by foot traffic on the street. Services might be cheap, but I don't know why you would want to stop at this location.

Located on the BU campus, this barbershop offers reasonable good haircuts at a decent price. It has changed since the veteran barber, Rocco, left, but there are still some good barbers that will give you a nice cut and maybe even remember your name. Cuts are 13 bucks plus tip. Not a bad deal for the ideal location.

Barbara at Total Skin Care is just the greatest. Her waxing is superb as far as waxing goes. It's as close to pain free as you can get and she is a total perfectionist. She is also great company. Total Skin Care also offers electrolysis. Judy is amazing. They also do great manicures and pedicures the right way - so it's enjoyable and not a chore you rush through. They moved locations a few years ago so they're a little bit off the beaten path but make sure you get yourself there. It's really the best place I've ever been.

Judy's book won't let me edit this review. This place wasn't as great as
initially seemed. All of the friendliness was faked. And they lost the best
hairdresser in Boston, in my opinion. Stanley went to L'Elegance. I
followed. I suggest you do too.

When I hear massage, I usually imagine candles and soothing music in a dimly lit cozy room. Not at The Boston Bodyworker. This place boasts about "bringing clinical massage to the masses", and that's exactly what it is. The premises look more like a physical therapy department at your medical center, but the massage was really good. The guy focused on really helping my tense back and he did help. I've had massages at spa salons before but they always focus more on making you feel pampered while you're there, not really on how your body will feel tomorrow. As long as you can do without the fancy-pants stuff, I really recommend The Boston Bodyworker.

More
This is a friendly, fun and clean tanning store. They carry any accessory imaginable such as lotion, SPF, eye protection etc They are cutting edge as far as tanning rooms and bulbs. It is very well air conditioned in summer and heated in the winter; conveniently, it is open 7 days a week and you do not need an appointment. Ive just walked in during the winter, feeling blue, and have been taken immediately. Ive never felt sweaty in the booths as they have some sort of high tech cooling system which is nice. It is located on chic Newbury Street therefore it is a bit more expensive than other tanning shops. If you are looking for some color and a cool location, this is the place to go...just bring your charge card. They do tend to run specials which helps alleviate the pricing.
Pros: Friendly and knowlegeable staff, safe area, very clean

Ive gone here a dozen times for the Mystic Tan and its reasonably priced. The booth appears very clean and organized. The front desk clerks are young, tan and friendly. The location is very convenient as its just off of the Kenmore T stop. They do offer the different shades of the Mystic Tan and they provide instructions on the wall of your changing room. You do have to ask for personal instruction, if this is preferred which I do recommend for your first time. I use the wall instructions as a refresher only. Be sure to exfoliate before going! I highly recommend this place for the Mystic Tan.
