A great independent store, this store is a treasure hunt for old, used, or out of print books. The outdoor used book section is fun to rummage through, but make sure you have plenty of time to search through them, because they are organized according to subject, not author or title.

This store offers a good selection of used books, and later business hours than most other stores. Searching through used books can be quite an adventure, as you never know what you will find. One day I left with the very first edition of 1984, which was published in 1949, and another day I left completely empty handed. If you have the time, see what you can find.

This little bookstore, near Downtown Crossing, is a great place to spend some time browsing and poking through their great selection of used and antique books. I always get sucked in by their $1 rack, which is up on street level. The selection on the $1 shelves is constantly changing, and I have found some great gems there.
From the street, you walk down to the basement level and enter the little shop. It is floor to ceiling books! They have a nice selection of children’s books, and tons more. I tend to spend at least a half hour each time, browsing around and inhaling that gorgeous old book smell. They have beautiful antique books behind the counter.
Next time you’re in DTC check it out!

This is one of my favorite places in the city. They offer great books, both used and new at prices that are rock bottom. Have a problem? Their friendly staff will help you. They don’t carry a book? They will be happy to order it for you and even ship it to your house. You can also sell them back your books for a pretty good deal, especially when you ask for store credit.

Everyone loves to go here, I think it is awful but I go cause everyone else does. True it is a good atmosphere for late night in Boston especially if you're not into the bar scene. The service is AWFUL though (not enough of them), everytime I go, and the food is often just plain weird. Once I got fruit salad that tasted like garlic and I JUST last weeked got a poached egg that was so sour I had to spit it out because they put way too much vinegar in the boiling water. They also forget part of my order every time (and I go a lot.) When served as asked their sandwiches are pretty good though and I like their tea selection and the sweet potato fries rock.

This is a great Christian bookstore that holds things ranging from, the most important, Bibles, to Bible carriers as well as devotional materials. Not only does it carry books related on Christian topics but it also carries little gadgets and Christian decoration stuff as well. In addition, it is located on Washington Street, making it quite attractive and convenient to get to.

Barbara's Bestsellers is located in the center of South Station. It appears to be a small kiosk, but I have consistently been surprised that they have had every book I've looked for, every time I've stopped by. I love browsing the books while waiting for commuter trains... it is much better than buying a magazine or something from the newsstand. Everyone that works there is so nice. I used to work next door and would stop by frequently on my lunch breaks. Although I didn't speak to the staff too often, they began to recognize me after a while and whenever I'd buy a book, they'd give me the "good friends" discount. I always appreciated the gesture very much! They have staff recommendations on the inside corners of the store, which are always fun to read.
