My best friend's father is a used book dealer and we grew up going to the Brattle Book store with him. At a younger age, I didn't fully appreciate how wonderful the selection was, but I am now constantly amazed at the treasures held within the store. A definite must for anyone who appreciates rare books.

I find clothes, vintage 70's jewelry, purses, scarfs, shoes, and now lingerie. I'm buying clothes at a fraction of their cost.
There are lightly used and new clothes mixed in thru out the store.
The owners, Joy & Judy, act like personal shoppers for all their customers. They are extremely helpful in coordinating outfits for job interviews, weddings, proms any occassion.
My best outfits come from Karma!

We travel in from RI to shop at this store which stocks quality titles on a variety of subjects and in a depth not possible with most new bookstores, and usually not seen in most used bookstores. As someone who travels and shops for books all over the country I would compare it to any of the great academic bookstores in Berkeley, Chicago, or NYC. I think some who go into this shop just won't get it, but for those who still think and demand something besides the usual slop one see in most bookstores nowadays this store is among the best at what it does. Evidently others besides some of the reviewers on this list do as well as I noticed last time I was there that they won Best used bookstore in Boston award for 2006. It is also interesting to note that this store is home to Black Widow Press, one of the more interesting small poetry presses in the country. Probably also explains why their poetry section is comparable to the Grolier Poetry Bookshop in Cambridge. I heartily recommend this store.

This store is no longer at 148 Salem St.. I went to visit and found nothing at Salem St. And may in fact be closed, as I called information and they couldn't find a new address for the store. I was terribly disappointed. Where the heck are all the cool vintage stores in Boston?!!! It's so sad there is almost no vintage stores in Boston. And the ones here mainly specialize in clothes. I am interested in vintage photographs, ceramics, jewelry, toys, magazines, buttons, frames, hats, records, random junk, etc... (and yes, I know about Boomerangs in JP.) How is an artist supposed to create with out totally retro supplies and cool inspiration? Anyways don't head over to Salem St.

My husband and I were having a rough time deciding how to furnish our condo and then we met Jonathan Diamond. He took the time to really get to know us. By careful interviewing and gentle guidance, he helped us discover what we really liked and made us comfortable. I guess you could say he helped us find our own personal style. We call him our "furniture shrink." He stayed right on budget and his advice was right on target.
Pros: Experienced interior design skills, great selection of product, good service.
Cons: Parking can be challenging.

Great store with interesting and varied inventory....from18 centruy American to Victorian, to Arts and Crafts movements to "shabby chic". Furniture, glassware, china, rugs, mirrors, just such a cool store overall. Also, prices are so reasonable, I pretty much furnished my entire apartment there ! Staff very nice and helpful but not intrusive. Wish there were more stores like this on Charles Street!
Pros: Best value for money in Beacon Hill/Back Bay
Cons: Parking can be tough, but Boston Common Garage is easy walk

I stumbled upon poor little rich girl last Saturday after getting my hair done on Newbury.
This little shop is so dang cute I cannot even believe it!
It's small, but I found there were a lot of varied things to look at. Vintage aprons, 80's pumps, 50's dresses, 70's maxi-dresses. There was also some modern secondhand from the likes of Anthropologie and Ralph Lauren.
Everything was reasonably priced, I didn't see anything over $80, I would say the average item was around $35 or so.
It definitely has the vibe of a hand curated shop, everything was adorable, all was in-style, and in great shape.
The woman working, I think she was the owner, was very kind and helpful and she was playing some great music to top it all off!
I will be telling others about this little gem on Newbury, or maybe I will keep the secret to myself!
Cheers!
S.R.
