My best friend's father is a used book dealer and we grew up going to the Brattle Book store with him. At a younger age, I didn't fully appreciate how wonderful the selection was, but I am now constantly amazed at the treasures held within the store. A definite must for anyone who appreciates rare books.

Brattle Book Shop is the kind of bookstore that was around before the big chains took over. It is nice that Brattle is still in business-- and it will be in business for quite some time. There is quite a variety of genres to choose from. The space is small, and books are EVERYWHERE. You can even sell your own used books here. It's a great place with a terrific staff. The books are priced very well.
PROS: old-fashioned bookstore, inexpensive, you can sell your own books here
CONS: small and cramped space

I am partial to Avenue De Victor Hugo and Commonwealth Books, but the Brattle Book Shop is not too dissapointing. I find it the most convenient place to seel my used books from school because they offer a way better price than most other bookshops and are not too dilligent about old books or beat up ones. They also have a good selection of titles, but this is definitely the place to go to get money for your old books and they are open on Saturday. Don't forget to bring a photo i.d. if you want to sell your books!
PROS: Sell your books here

There's something so academic about poking around the Brattle Book Shop. I love looking at every title, wondering about the contents of each book and, especially, who owned it before me and why. There is so much obscurity contained within these walls, and so much I have to wonder about. Brattle is a gem, with knowledgeable staff and a great outdoor sale running throughout the summer.

This place has the weirdest, cheapest, and oldest used books of any of the major suppliers in the area. I love how diverse the inventory is (huge sections in Americana and Pets the last time I was in), and the carts outside definitely reward careful perusal: I once found a rare early 19th-century mythological dictionary there, one copy of which belonged to Keats. It's not going to have everything you want, but it's great fun to browse around and sometimes you really luck out.

Walking into the Brattle Book shop I'm reminded of one of those musty old libraries you see in the movies where intelligent little men with British accents and tweed jackets explain the intricacies of British literature to you before you even ask whether he prefers Charlotte or Emily Bronte. And I love it. The Brattle Book Shop has an amazing selection of used books, always in quite good condition and never expensive. I spend a lot of time in their children's section looking for unique copies of selections such as The Phantom Tollbooth.

This is one of my favorite bookstores. I was first attracted to its outdoor section, where used books are sold for $1-$5. There are all kinds of books in this section, and you can find amazing deals like the complete Pelican Shakespeare for $1. You can also find books from the 18th century, for instance. There are, of course, also many contemporary books. If you still have time, go look inside the store, where many rare and first edition books are displayed. The store is fairly small and cramped, but CHOCKED full of wonderful books.
