I was born and raised in Boston. I no longer live there but there is a Legals that has opened in my city. In fact many. The fish is fresh however the prices are ASTRONOMICAL now. Although this was never a restaurant that was cheap it was reasonable. Now I feel as though I might as well bend over as I walk through the door! I will admit the clam chowder is the best in town and it is still reasonably priced. I now go into the bar order a drink and a bowl of chowder and some bread and can at least walk out of there for under 20.00. I would suggest you do the same. There are other places for fresh fish in Boston that you don't have to pay those types of prices.

Clam chowder is unbeatable! Tasty, chunky, creamy, everything a clam chowder should be.
The portions are quite large. The menu has a great variety of traditional, regional and exotic dishes.
Service is slow (usually crowded) and the place is not as cozy as it could be. Ambience is still interesting...
If you are a seafood lover, visit Legal Sea Foods, and definitely try their clam chowder.

I've eaten at Legal's several times over the years. My review: Fresh but boring. Yes the fish is fresh. But in a city of great restaraunts this doesn't deserve to be #1 in the category. The menu is very boring, with you picking the fish and the way its cooked. A good restaurant should put together complimentary selections for you. Not make you pick. Further, its very expensive for a slab of fish!

Without exageration, there were 30 kids in that restaurant, including 7 within 2 tables of us. the screeming, jumping, crying, etc were unbearable. the waitress even came over and apologized and told us not to come back at that time. the food was very good though.

The last four times we have dined here the food had been served lukewarm to cool, there isn't much of it and it is very overpriced. At best, the service (wait staff) has been slow and mediocre, at worst our table was ingnored after the entree was served, lack of attention to detail. I consider dining at Legal Seafoods to be an experience I don't want to repeat, so do our friends.
This is not how I rember Legal Seafoods in the past, it was one of the best . I'm sure the owners would have a fit and whip this branch back into shape if they knew how bad it was.

Legal seems to be one of those places everyone wants to go to when they come to Boston. Almost synonamous with Boston and seafood. The food is good and the chowder is excellent (but not the best in the city in my opinion); however, for you money you can do better. Naked fish is similar in price and the fish tastes better and seems fresher. Personally I'd rather eat my scallops or swordfish at McCormick and Schmidts or if you want a real treat ... pry yourself away for the steaks at Grill 23 and order some of the best seafood in Boston.
