Great place to lick your chops at both pizza and b-b-q. Convienient location.
Like the car tunnel nearby, timing is everything and there can be a wait.
The Bottom Line
This is a great place to go and feel at home without worry about dress code. Very casual dining with good old-fashioned Italian food, pizza, and B-B-Q.
In what was once an all Italian neighborhood
Santarpio’s restaurant is a place in East Boston that many regulars go to for a great afternoon or evening of pizza and b-b-q. The room is not elegant but clean and comfortable. You need not dress for the occasion for the only thing exciting here are the food, friends, and your company that you bring. There are booths for a little privacy if you are bringing the kids or a date. You can belly up to the bar and get all of your service from the bartenders. They will serve you your food and drink.
Santarpio's is a place that serves the great old-fashioned crusted pizza. The pizza has a fabulous crust, real Italian pizza sauce, and lots of cheese. Santarpio’s is old style pizza made from the purist of Italians in old Italian East Boston. One of the great original old style restaurants. They also have a b-b-q pit that you can ask for a skewer of lamb, steak, or combo of tips.
Santarpio's does not deliver. You have to call in your order and pick it up. When you do pick it up go into the side door on the left side of the building. At the main entrance you will encounter a small line of hungry people most times of the afternoon waiting for a table. There is a side door that leads directly to the kitchen cooks where they have a pick up counter of sorts. While you wait for your order you can see the best in the business make pizza.
As I said, Santarpio’s is O.K. for a casual date or a long developed relationship. However, I would not bring a first date here. There is nothing romantic about this place. I prefer this with a group of friends on an afternoon when you can belly up to the bar, split a pizza while you wait for your lamb tip order. It comes out with fresh baked Italian bread and a few hot peppers. Mmmmmm hot peppers! My mouth waters!
There are many other Italian selections you can order from Santarpio’s including pasta dishes and fries for the kids. This is a friendly atmosphere restaurant. Located on the outer side of the Callahan tunnel leading from inner Boston to the airport. If landing at Logan airport, Santarpio’s is just outside of the airport. The food is above average overall. It is ginzo's pick for Italian B-B-Q. Enjoy!

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations Pizza is where it's at at santarpio's and the B-B-Q tips are a top choice. Located near the airport. Very casual dining.

I've even seen pilots and flight attendants from Alitalia braving the lines here, so that must mean something. I prefer thicker crust pizzas, so this isn't my favorite. I wonder how much of the enjoyment is 1) the hype and the pressure to like it, 2) your starvation point once you finally get seated, 3) the thrill of a cheap meal. It's true that they don't use that disgusting greasy cheap cheese. The inexpensive house wine definitely adds to the joy of it. Boston is such a rude city, I guess the rude and impatient service just goes with the area (unfortunate first stop for people going there en route from the airport). Parking of course is challenging, and it is a bit of a walk in a bit of a dicey (though improving) neighborhood. The lamb appetizer is good, too. You definitely know that the waitstaff wants you in and out, and no accomodating special requests.

Santarpio's Pizza has been around forever. It's great. I remember getting a pie with friends and going to Revere Beach for a picnic at dusk. The restaurant itself in terms of decor and all that is not the reason to go but the food is great. It gets crowded so make sure you avoid the obvious peak times if you're not a patient person.

So, for anyone familiar with Ed Debevic's restaurant in Chicago -- Santarpio's service is similar, but it's not an "act" - it's just the way they do things. They have PHENOMENAL pizzas, so to some people it's worth it. If you are a bit uptight, I wouldn't suggest this place. But, for those of you who want an authentic East Boston experience - give it a shot. The pepperoni w/garlic pizza is to die for, and they serve a cheap chianti house wine - but for some reason it tastes like a million buck when paired with their pizza! Parking can be a challenge - but it's a perfect place to stop on your way to or from Logan.

Hey- do you want decent pizza that everyone raves about with the rudeness and attitude of those who feel pride in being completely blue collar? I was raised in a very democratic blue collar family but at least we had manners! The service was horrible and our food was thrown down on the table quite literally - the pizza was ok- interesting and very thin, but I cant imagine going to this hole in the wall near the airport ever again. My friend who is a pilot can go back on his own next time. The rudeness of the staff which they say is "typical" is not my style, no pizza could make up for that. I also would say the pizza was ok, but not "all that" like I expected from my friend's reviews.
