really wanted to like this restaurant, but sadly I just do not like French food. Petit Robert Bistro is on Columbus Street in what used to be Rouge. The restaurant is smallish with two rooms, one with a bar and 6 tables and a main dining room. First, the wine was excellent, a nice bottle of Merlot. The bread, as you would expect, was very good(as it would be my primary sustenance for the evening)...The smoked salmon ap was good as well The main course, which was salmon legs, was disappointing through no fault of their own. French food requires tons of butter and cream, which is not my preferred cuisine to say the least. To be fair, everyone else seemed to be really enjoying their meals. Then again, they were all Francophiles. And I did not see Freedom Fries anywhere!!!

This time last year, I was at the French Open, and for the past several days, I have wished I was back in Paris. Fortunately a friend invited to me to dine at Petit Robert Bistro and from the moment I entered this divine and charming place, I was instantly swept back to my favorite Parisian bistro. I started with a mixed green salad with a tangy, but subtle, mustard vinaigrette. The fresh bread was a tip off that this establishment has deep roots in presenting a traditionally exquisite french dining experience. The small baguette was so crisp and fresh, I could have dined on bread alone. But being the glutton that I am, I could not resist ordering the calves liver with onions and bacon. I may only try this dish once a year, so it has been quite awhile since I have been able to savor a presentation as sublime as this. The spot on presentation indicates to me that all entrées would be beautifully prepared. (And while I love Brasserie Jo, let me say that their presentation of calves' liver is not even in the same league.) The steak frites that my friend ordered were outstanding. There are so many wonderful items on the menu that I can not wait to go back. Some very interesting seafood preparations will be the area I will focus on on my next visit, primarily the creamy lobster bisque and an item that featured scallops in their shell...Yum.. And, the service was outstanding! This is a wonderful place for a first date, an anniversary and especially for couples who enjoy a great dining out experience.

The food here is incredible, especially when you take the prices into account. Forget the super-expensive French restaurant and come here instead. Entrees are all under $20, and they're all extremely tasty. There's also a great dessert menu with an open dessert kitchen for you to drool voyeuristically. The only downside is the place is extremely crowded, and you may have to compete with Sox fans for things like parking. Make sure you have a reservation.

The Petit Robert Bistro in Kenmore Square serves up French-inspired entrées with an emphasis on value. Few dishes top the $20, a rare find when considering other French restaurants in Boston. Entrées are not as inventive here as other places such as L'Espalier, but the flavors and traditions carry well into each of the plates. Service here is ok, and reflects the slightly blue-collar atmosphere of this section of Boston. The sandwiches on the lunch menu are excellent and come served on classic French baguettes.

I wouldn't mind going back except for the waitstaff. The bus boy did most of the work cleaning the table, refilling our water, and packing our orders to take home. The waitress took a long time to take our order. She checked on the table next to us more often than checking on us. When we wished dinner, she didn't even bother asking if we wanted desert. She automatically asked the table next to us.

Of course, the second that you step down into this new bistro in the newly energized Kenmore Square one realizes that forgetting Paris will be impossible. From the efficient, singing French waiter to the decor and the wonderful warm, crusty bread, you will sware you've stepped into a neighborhood bistro in France itself. The bistro is what a bistro should be - a casual place where you could have dinner any night of the week. The food is fantastic - try the salad with shallot vinagrette and goat cheese that will leave you wanting more. Have it with the "Soup Du Jour." They are unique and as flavorful as they sound. I had the cream of leek and mushroom soup. Yum! The best could possibly be left for last as the lower level of the restaurant hosts a pastry bar where you can witness the surreal scene of the uber talented pastry chef concoct a cake with a chocolate eiffel tower on it while watching Manny hit another homerun on the tv located at the pastry bar. (The tv is there, but very unobtrusive. You'd never know it was there in the dining room upstairs.) Don't forget lunch - it's about the best deal in town. How about a Croque Monsieur for $4.50 or a Parisian hot dog on baguette for $6. (Great spot for before the game. They serve the lunch menu until 5.30 everynight.) Don't miss the "Burgerdog. - literally a burger shaped as a hot dog. This is no average burger. And if you are in the mood for a little breakfast/brunch - the eggs benedict is truly one of the best I've ever had. Service is a little clumsy as they are new, but their genuine interest in the guest having a great experience (including personal greeting by the co-owner/General Manager every time I've been) far outweighs the opening blips. Give Petit Robert Bistro a try!
