Where do celebrity chef's like Lydia Shire and the late Julia Child go when they need exotic ingredients for their dishes? The answer is the Savenor's Market in Beacon Hill. Here you can find the most ecclectic mix of hard-to-find materials that are every cooks dreams. Some ingredients can cost a bundle- black truffle oil per se. The most interesting finds are the strange meats this market has to offer-- including bear, lion, and alligator. If you're in the mood for something different for dinner, definitely stop by and see what new you can find!

I love all the trader joes locations, but this one used to be the closest one for me. This is a small location than the one in Brookline, but still has the same great products. I love the soy cheese, pumpkin seed bread, california veggie burgers, and soycatash. Those items have become our staples whenever we get a chance to do a trader joes run. This location can get pretty crowded on weekends and around rush-hour on the week-days, so I recommend going during non-peak hours to avoid playing bumper-baskets with other shoppers.

I love Whole Foods...Always have. I lived in Brookline and shopped at the one in Brighton. Now I live in the South End and walk to the one near Symphony.
Maybe my affection emanates from the deep seated feeling that what I have been eating at other places will be removed in my arteries one day. Then again, perhaps it is the array of healthy food that intrigues me. Even the chips seem healthy(I wish).
There is something also to be said for a company that cares about their employees, offers good service and has a selection of product that won't kill you....even if you have to pay a little more" Friend Quick Search

Merchant's Wine is one of the best wine shops in Boston, if not the best. The staff is the most helpful I've ever seen. They consistently recommend the best wine for the occasion and/or meal. They all know their wines and are willing to work within your price range, whether it be on the high end or on the low end. They also have a pretty decent selection of cheeses and bread from Iggy's. This is by far my favorite wine store!

The prices at this grocery/fine foods shop are outrageously expensive. Compare for yourself -- choose any item and then go to a larger market and note the difference.
That said, this is a very convenient place. It's small, stacked racks and neighborhood feel are pleasing. There's the whole Beacon Hill thing going on here -- high prices and New England prissiness -- but the owners/staff are a diverse group ethnically and nationally. They are friendly and fun.
The deli counter offers great chicken salad and lasagna -- I recommend both.
Overall, if you need to pick up small stuff from time to time, this is the place.

More
Federal Wine and Spirits is hands down my favorite wine store in Boston. The staff are friendly and boy, do they know their wine, beer and spirits. They are always willing to help with recommendations, and really know their stuff. They have a fairly large selection of wine, much of it in the cellar downstairs. They often get really special wines and beers, some of which are far outside my price range.
They have tastings every week. Usually the tastings are of wine, but they occasionally have beer and spirits tastings too. Every week they also put out a newsletter, which is filled with great info about their weekly specials, as well as general wine information. The store is small, but well stocked and you can find some really obscure beers here!

More
DeLuca's offers what your local grocery store or convenience store never will, variety beyond the American brand names. For the health conscious, there are a variety of organic products from peanut butter, jellies, and preserves, to milk and eggs to breads. For those who favor sweets of the import variety there is always swiss chocolate like Lindt in stock. There is a larger selection of bottled waters with and without flavoring as well as real entrees at the deli and fresh fruit when you don't quite have the time for anything more complicated.
The entrees are hit or miss as to taste but usually are better than edible and can be as good as quite tasty.
DeLuca's is not inexpensive but typically worth the extra penny.

A smaller version of the Super Stop and Shop
This is a small version of the normal Stop & Shops. It is clean and friendly. The parking can be tricky on Saturday mornings but otherwise not too difficult. It is conveniently located by a bank and convenience store but it is difficult to reach if you are T bound although there is a MBTA bus a few stop blocks away. The produce is always fresh as well as the meats. At times, I find that this store runs low on items prior to replenishment which is likely due to the size. It is located in a very safe area of Southie (South Boston).
