I am so glad to see this store is opening in Tuscaloosa as well. I always made the drive many miles to Birmingham, but it was always worth it.
This store caters to anything and everything outdoors. Whether you are a hunter, fisherman, canoer, hiker, soccer player, whatever, this store has products for everyone. They are so unbelievably cheaply priced on their items as well. The fishing lure you pay $5.00 for everywhere else costs only $2.00 here. They have clothes for your activity, even down to children's sizes. They have guns and bows, fishing rods and reels, a big selection of fly tying materials, and even boats and canoes and kayaks. They have sports equipment as well.
This is the store to go to if you are searching for anything outdoor related that you may need. Other stores cannot compete with their prices.

Aldridge Gardens is a nice botanical garden for those in the southern part of Birmingham that don't want to drive to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for a nice walk in the park. The gardens are well landscaped with the main feature being a large lake with a gently sloping waterfall. Although not a large park, it's about the right size for a leisurely 20 minute walk. The park is free although they ask for donations.

This store has a wide array of cards from all major sports. Their baseball cards include all the major brands, and jumbo hobby boxes. They have large displays of collectible or hot cards, reasonably priced (although eBay prices would be a bit cheaper in some instances) and you should feel comfortable asking for anything you don't see because they have vastly more in the back that they can't display up front. This is a fine store. Also note that in general their staff are themselves collectors, so they can teach you stuff.

What a wonderful neighborhood bicycle store! I came in here and got a great bike and helmets for 5 children--all fitted and adjusted in 20 minutes flat! When my son's bike needed adjusted a few days later, the person who had sold us the bike met us at the door and immediately made the adjustment and sent us on our way. I love the location--tucked into a cozy neighborhood but with several fun stores right there next to it. The whole experience made me feel warm and fuzzy and well taken care of.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is one of the bests spots in Birmingham to take a nice stroll or relax and have a picnic. The Gardens are a lot bigger than how is looks like from the outside. There are different areas from the bamboo forest to the Southern Living section to the famous rose garden. The entry is free and they have annual fesitvals such as the Camelia festival.

More
The Civil Rights Institute is probably the most important place to visit in Birmingham. It is a nonprofit, privately and publicly funded museum to the civil rights movement as it unfolded, principally in Birmingham in the 1950s through 1960s. The exhibits include a short introducting movie, models of segregated facilities, detailed memorabilia of the segregaged South, and then a slow walk through a mixture of documents, photographs, recorded voices, television images, and even the bombed out front end of a bus from the Freedom Riders. Every visit is engrossing and you will learn something more every time you come. On Sundays, incidentally, a number of veterans of the Struggle are at the museum just to talk with visitors.

This place is weird; you step in and can't help but feel that there's things you don't want to know about it. Unless you're a personal friend, the staff isn't very friendly, in fact, they kind of act as though they want you to leave as soon as possible. They do tattoos and body piercing, but let's face it--I wouldn't let them near me with a ten-foot pole. The prices are expensive, they sell mostly tobacco specialty products and novelty items. Not worth the trip.

This is located just off of Lakeshore next to Old Navy. I've been here several times throughout the years, and find that it isn't up to standard with the other Books A Million stores. This one doesn't seem to ever have what I'm looking for, and they don't really seem to know anything about books. It's a very impersonal atmosphere, but they do have a coffee shop inside, which is really the only good thing they have.

More
This is the most beautiful relaxing place in all of the Birmingham, Alabama area. The Japanese garden area is my favorite area in the gardens. They have multi-sections featuring plants from various sources. There is an herbal section and a rose section. This is a beautiful location for professional photographers. The gardens offer classes for school age children during the summer months. There is a restaurant and gift shop. No admission fee.
