I bought a family membership to the Birmingham Zoo last year for 80.00. Every weekend I took my daughter to the zoo for an hour on Saturday. We could usually cover about 1/2 of the zoo before she ran out of steam. Her favorite exhibit was the butterfly encounter that opens in 2006 on April 15th. It has over 500 butterflies and we even had one land on us a time or two.

This is the most beautiful relaxing place in all of the Birmingham, Alabama area. The Japanese garden area is my favorite area in the gardens. They have multi-sections featuring plants from various sources. There is an herbal section and a rose section. This is a beautiful location for professional photographers. The gardens offer classes for school age children during the summer months. There is a restaurant and gift shop. No admission fee.

This is one of the top notch libraries in Alabama. From the, of course, wide selection of books to check-out to the extensive video, DVD, and CD collection. There is also a nice store called "Friends of the Library" where you can either donate books to support the library or purchase used books. It's a good place to pick up kids books. Great for studying too.

More
The Civil Rights Institute is probably the most important place to visit in Birmingham. It is a nonprofit, privately and publicly funded museum to the civil rights movement as it unfolded, principally in Birmingham in the 1950s through 1960s. The exhibits include a short introducting movie, models of segregated facilities, detailed memorabilia of the segregaged South, and then a slow walk through a mixture of documents, photographs, recorded voices, television images, and even the bombed out front end of a bus from the Freedom Riders. Every visit is engrossing and you will learn something more every time you come. On Sundays, incidentally, a number of veterans of the Struggle are at the museum just to talk with visitors.

This place is weird; you step in and can't help but feel that there's things you don't want to know about it. Unless you're a personal friend, the staff isn't very friendly, in fact, they kind of act as though they want you to leave as soon as possible. They do tattoos and body piercing, but let's face it--I wouldn't let them near me with a ten-foot pole. The prices are expensive, they sell mostly tobacco specialty products and novelty items. Not worth the trip.

The newly remodeled Vulcan is a great place to visit, especially at night. The view is amazing, and it is a great place to take visitors to B'ham. The museum gives a nice overview of Birmingham's history in the steal industry. Would be a great place to have a special party or reception.

This is located just off of Lakeshore next to Old Navy. I've been here several times throughout the years, and find that it isn't up to standard with the other Books A Million stores. This one doesn't seem to ever have what I'm looking for, and they don't really seem to know anything about books. It's a very impersonal atmosphere, but they do have a coffee shop inside, which is really the only good thing they have.

Heardmont Park is the perfect place to take your children. They have a nice play area for bigger kids and small. The property is beautiful. The walk along trail will take to along side and over streams that are beautiful. They also have baseball and soccor fields. Next door is a police sub-station so you can always feel safe there.
