This joint covers only about 1000 to 1500 square feet, but the selection is refreshing. On a recent trip - we enjoy the downtown Homewood neighborhood for shopping and hanging out, in general - we found some unusual Blue Note jazz and a hearty selection of 1970s pop CDs that we had forgotten about (but we are now extremely happy to have added back into our collection, as our vinyl copies are long gone). The folk and blues selections were delightful, with many older recordings that we would never expect to find in a big chain store. The staff was extremely helpful, and were able to answer our questions quickly and with ease. We were also impressed with their selection of NEW vinyl, which apparently is a recent addition to the store (within the last year or two).

This is the kind of store that makes you hate mainstream CD stores for putting quaint little places like this out of business. Located in the heart of 5 Points South, Charlemagne is truly a place for music lovers. The atmosphere is that of an old loft filled with your favorite records, CDs, and old movie posters. The prices are a bit high, but well worth it. The staff is extremely helpful and nice, and they're always willing to do special orders.

I checked prices online before going to Art's. The asking price for the guitar I was looking for was the same as the lowest price I found online. I didn't have to ask them to match my best deal because they were already there. Service was a little slow but they were very busy during Christmas shopping season. Once a sales person was able to help me, I was treated as if I were the only customer in the store.

Sure there are bigger stores nearby, but then again so is Wal-mart. But the atmosphere is less chaotic, and the help friendlier (and cuter!). Great afternoon browse for odd books, eclectic videos, and vinyl from all eras. Not a shop for top40 shoppers and that's a BIG plus!

Located on the Northside of Birmingham, Mike's is a great place to go if you're looking for a new (used) guitar, bass, or basically any other musical instrument you might be looking for. The prices are decent, and the people who work here are really helpful. Besides the musical instruments, they also have an unusually large selection of jewelry. The only downside is that this town can be a tad on the dangerous side (this is generally true only at night), if you will, so don't be alarmed when you have to be buzzed into the store.

You can always tell when a music store is in it for the music, or the money. Well, unfortunately, Sam Goody is definitely in it for the money. I used to shop here until I realized I could get my music elsewhere for nearly half the price. They sell new CDs, a few used ones, DVDs, a few band shirts, and a few video games. The staff isn't ever very helpful, but they will order something for you if you can't find it–but really, I would suggest shopping for this stuff elsewhere.
