Southview Medical Group is a multispecialty group that operates as an independent corporate entity housed on the grounds of Birmingham's respected St. Vincent's Hospital. Internal medicine and most major internal medicine specialties (cardiology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology) are represented there, as are some non-internal medicine specialties like otolaryngology. As a patient it is more likely than not that you would join this group by becoming a primary care patient to one of the general internal medicine physicians (there are about 8 or 9). I don't know all the physicians but the one I see is thoughtful, bright, mid-career, which means he'll be around awhile, but is not just green out of residency either. The large-office format means that the experience of going there will feel a bit less individual and intimate, but it also means that workflow issues have been worked out well and you won't spend a lot of time sitting around waiting for a piece of paper or a blood draw or anything like that. Referrals and billing are processed efficiently. This is a good place to come for high quality adult primary care, but recognize that the "large group" format means it's not quite your old-fashioned 1-2 doctor office.

I have been with this doctor for over 10 years and he has been wonderful. His nurses are very quick and courteous in responding to phone calls and answering questions. I sometimes have to wait 30-45 minutes because he tends to fall behind in his appts for whatever reason. He is always friendly and open-minded and will try and help in anyway possible. He follows in his patients beliefs and isn't pushy in any new procedure or old procedure he may favor. Great doc.

The University Optometric Group provides good eye care and exams for patients. They provide full contact lens and eye glass services. Since they are a small clinic, the staff and optomotrist get to know you well. They can give you samples of disposable contact lenses to see which ones work best for you. Their eye glass selection is a bit small and the glasses take 1-2 weeks to make. I would suggest going to a larger eyeglass chain if you don't find any frames that you really love.

I actually give a 5 Star rating to Dr. Jolly, but the 4 stars for the practice in general. We have been taking our daughter to Dr. Jolly since she was born over 4 years ago. Even though it is now a 30 minute drive, it's still worth it to us! We absolutely love him, and know it would be extremely difficult if we had to move. He is a very knowledgeable, thorough, and caring Doctor.
We have seen one other Dr. in the practice, and though she was no Dr. Jolly, she was good as well. : ) The other Doctors are all women.

I use this vet on an as needed basis; however, he has the cheapest prices in town and is very experienced. He doesn't incorporate an office fee into his prices and so an annual checkup with shots for a dog is around $55 whereas the local vet up the street charges about $80! They don't take appointments and so you could be there a while (typical 15-20 minute wait). The vet isn't a talker and so you're in and out very quickly.

Cardiovascular Associates provide good care for patients. There are quite a few physicians in this practice and all appear to cover for each other. The waiting list for an appointment is long but if your medical doctor or nurse calls for you Cardiovascular Associates will work you in sooner. They have a lab in the building and can get lab work completed on the day of your office visit. The staff is professional and keep the patients informed of the wait time, which is usually a very long .

Some of them do care. But as a veteran, and the widow of one as well, I've found that a great many of them seem to think they are overworked and underpaid. They don't seem to realize that vets give up a lot for them to feel that way. Doctors need to listen better and care more.
