Sportplex is a great facility. They offer 3 40,000 sq foot super clubs. They just added a brand new cardio room that has flat screen tvs-it is really nice. They have raquetball, an indoor track, and even have child care-which is FREE!! They also have group fitness classes that are also free! It doesnt get much better then that!

DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THESE CLOWNS
The facility is ok with good cardio and free weights. No pool. No raquetball. No basketball. Pretty booring really.
My wife signed up for a contract because she likes a particular class called "Dance Trance". She signed up for a year membership but had the sales associate guarantee that if Dance Trance were to be cancelled, she could get out.
Guess what... Dance Trance is cancelled and they won't return our calls for cancellation. They also formally rejected our submission for cancellation. This is a very shady business and I would not recommend them.

The YMCA in Birmingham has several locations and when you join one you have access to all the others. For persons living on the Southern edge of Birmingham, or in "just over the mountain" Vestavia and Homewood, the Shades Creek YMCA is the most convenient place to go, located just off 31-South (the main North-South Highway that goes through Birmingham and extends through the Southern Burbs). This is a medium sized facility with a full set of free and machine-weights (probably 30 apparati for machine weights), generous freeweight space, and perhaps 25 or 30 aerobic machines (including 10 elliptical trainers, 6 of which are the more desirable arm+leg combined motion ones). There is both an indoor 40 yard pools and an outdoor one, indoor basketball courst, Yoga, Spinning. Customers record workouts on FitLinxx-equipped machinery and point totals allow you to earn kudos and some low-cost prices (i.e. t-shirts) from the staff. Daycare is free for the tots so you can bring the little brat in with you and still get a chance to exercise. Bathroom/shower facilities are plain Jane but workable. Family membership is about $200 a quarter.

I went to Jenny Craig about 6 years ago. Granted, it could be a good place NOW, they burned me out on them to the point that I will never go back.
First of all, they make you buy their food. That is crazy expensive (if I can recall, all those years ago I was paying maybe $150-200 per week for just food). Their associates aren't the friendliest people in the world. When I went, the woman that was kind of like my "sponsor" was indifferent and a tad snobby. So were the other people working there.
There is no supportive atmosphere from my experience. Also, if you want your records for future reference, good luck trying to get them to help you dig them up. I called them a few weeks ago and they basically told me to shove off.
Jenny Craig could be the best diet center in the world, but my experience sucked, for lack of better terms. It's expensive and doesn't really do much to help you lose weight.
