The Alabama Theater is such an amazing building. When you walk in it feels like you are taking a trip back in time. It is absolutely gorgeous. They have events there all the time....one of my friends actually had his high school graduation there and I thought that was an amazing place to have it at.

Alys Stephens is located on the campus of UAB and plays host to a wide variety of cultural events and shows. The theaters are very nicely set up, and I haven't ever had a bad seat. I have attended multiple events, including author readings, and school events, to symphony shows and always come away impressed with the quality of the venue and the quality of the shows booked by the venue. I definitely recommend keeping tabs on the upcoming event calender.

I checked prices online before going to Art's. The asking price for the guitar I was looking for was the same as the lowest price I found online. I didn't have to ask them to match my best deal because they were already there. Service was a little slow but they were very busy during Christmas shopping season. Once a sales person was able to help me, I was treated as if I were the only customer in the store.

We attended all three days of the 2006 Honda Superbike Classic at Barber Motorsports complex.
It is the most race fan friendly venue in the country, bar none. Every aspect is well organized and beautifully maintained. We set up an 8'x8' canopy, with lawn chairs and cooler, and from our vantage point could view fully 50% of the course while listening to the race announcer on FM radio. Movement about the facility is facilitated by frequent trams that circle the course. Be sure to plan a visit to the museum, it is breathtaking in its beauty and presentation.

Despite the fact that I used to live 3 minutes down the road, I had never been to this theater until a few days ago, and that was only because they were the only theater around showing "Running with Scissors".
I always had an impression that this was going to be a snooty, lame, expensive theater. I was wrong! From my experience, the people were very nice and the prices were very fair, especially on concessions.
This is a fun theater to visit, because it's so colorful! The decorum is very modern and fun to look at. And there are TONS of stalls in the bathrooms, which is a very good thing. There are 10 screens, and plenty of seats...which brings me to my one and only real complaint.
They boast on the website that there are 48 inches of leg room in front of each seat. Which is true, yes. BUT, that's only until someone sits down in the seat in front of you. The seats tend to automatically recline, kind of like airline seats, which is a bit annoying. It doesn't leave you (and the person behind you) very much leg room, in my opinion. But that may not bother anyone else.
All in all, this is a great theater. Very clean, and there is a parking deck next to it so parking is never a problem.

More
The Civil Rights Institute is probably the most important place to visit in Birmingham. It is a nonprofit, privately and publicly funded museum to the civil rights movement as it unfolded, principally in Birmingham in the 1950s through 1960s. The exhibits include a short introducting movie, models of segregated facilities, detailed memorabilia of the segregaged South, and then a slow walk through a mixture of documents, photographs, recorded voices, television images, and even the bombed out front end of a bus from the Freedom Riders. Every visit is engrossing and you will learn something more every time you come. On Sundays, incidentally, a number of veterans of the Struggle are at the museum just to talk with visitors.

More
The Birmingham Museum of Art is small-to-mid-sized and it will not give you the kind of "wow" that MOMA or the Chicago Art Institute does. Birmingham is a small town. That said, they have respectable collections in a variety of areas: African art, Asian arts (including multiple ethnic traditions from Japan, China, Korea), European fine art, photography and often local Birmingham artists. The layout is sufficiently generous that you definitely can get engrossed in the exhibits. High quality travelling exhibits do make it to Birmingham, including (in 2004) European painting from the 17th and 16th century. Quality is high, layout is clean, and the Musuem is quite enjoyable.

I love getting the Birmingham News. To me, they do a great amount of coverage of the state and local areas. I like reading the paper for the human interest and state-related stories. I enjoy the photos as well. I think the paper has grown for the better over the last 20 years. The stories have gotten better, and each sections seems to have more substance than before then. To me, this is a great companion newspaper to a national one. I love readng a national one along with this one. I do recommend The Birmingham News.

The Birmingham Zoo is so much fun for people of all ages. They have so many different and beautiful animals. It is in a very nice part of town and is right by Botanical Gardens. The park is nicely spaced out and the prices are not bad at all. The staff is always so very nice and they are always teaching lessons to the cutomers. They have wonderful Wildlife Shows, too. The also have Zoolite Safari in December when the entire park is decorated with christmas lights inside out! It is a lot of fun.
