I first took my daughter to the McWane center the day after she turned one. I was so excited to see that they had a special area just for kids under 4. It has a water table, an over sized garden with gigantic mushrooms and corn stalks with tunnels to climb in and out, a jungle gym play zone with three levels (this is like the ones at McDonalds but more educational), a imagination room with mini grocery store, library, cars and trucks, and tables to work puzzles from 3 pieces to 100 pieces. It also has an area for babies under two with huge styrofoam blocks to climb on, block stackers, and an assortment of educational based toys. On the lower level there is a mini aquarium that my daughter has always been fascinated by. It definitely is a place for kids of all ages.

The Birmingham Zoo is so much fun for people of all ages. They have so many different and beautiful animals. It is in a very nice part of town and is right by Botanical Gardens. The park is nicely spaced out and the prices are not bad at all. The staff is always so very nice and they are always teaching lessons to the cutomers. They have wonderful Wildlife Shows, too. The also have Zoolite Safari in December when the entire park is decorated with christmas lights inside out! It is a lot of fun.

This is the most beautiful relaxing place in all of the Birmingham, Alabama area. The Japanese garden area is my favorite area in the gardens. They have multi-sections featuring plants from various sources. There is an herbal section and a rose section. This is a beautiful location for professional photographers. The gardens offer classes for school age children during the summer months. There is a restaurant and gift shop. No admission fee.

This joint covers only about 1000 to 1500 square feet, but the selection is refreshing. On a recent trip - we enjoy the downtown Homewood neighborhood for shopping and hanging out, in general - we found some unusual Blue Note jazz and a hearty selection of 1970s pop CDs that we had forgotten about (but we are now extremely happy to have added back into our collection, as our vinyl copies are long gone). The folk and blues selections were delightful, with many older recordings that we would never expect to find in a big chain store. The staff was extremely helpful, and were able to answer our questions quickly and with ease. We were also impressed with their selection of NEW vinyl, which apparently is a recent addition to the store (within the last year or two).

This is the kind of store that makes you hate mainstream CD stores for putting quaint little places like this out of business. Located in the heart of 5 Points South, Charlemagne is truly a place for music lovers. The atmosphere is that of an old loft filled with your favorite records, CDs, and old movie posters. The prices are a bit high, but well worth it. The staff is extremely helpful and nice, and they're always willing to do special orders.

This is an absolutely fantastic place to go if you like comedy. Take a date, go with friends, go alone if you have to, but go! They have good comedians come here: I've seen Mitch Hedurg, Carlos Mencia, and others. The atmosphere is great for a comedy club, the food is great, and the drinks are even better. It's hard not to like a place that keeps you laughing so hard it's hard to eat and drink!

If you've started to think that you're too old to go to local clubs and hear new music but have never been to Workplay, you should go. This theater, owned by former MTV-VJ Alan Hunter, is acoustically wonderful. The place is smoke free except for the lobby bar, so no worrying about coming out of a concert smelling like smoke. Best of all, most concerts actually start when they say it's going to start. There is an upper level that has tables and is only for 21 and older people. The music that is brought to Workplay tends to be singer-songwriters or up and coming artists.

More
The Civil Rights Institute is probably the most important place to visit in Birmingham. It is a nonprofit, privately and publicly funded museum to the civil rights movement as it unfolded, principally in Birmingham in the 1950s through 1960s. The exhibits include a short introducting movie, models of segregated facilities, detailed memorabilia of the segregaged South, and then a slow walk through a mixture of documents, photographs, recorded voices, television images, and even the bombed out front end of a bus from the Freedom Riders. Every visit is engrossing and you will learn something more every time you come. On Sundays, incidentally, a number of veterans of the Struggle are at the museum just to talk with visitors.

The Alabama Theater is such an amazing building. When you walk in it feels like you are taking a trip back in time. It is absolutely gorgeous. They have events there all the time....one of my friends actually had his high school graduation there and I thought that was an amazing place to have it at.
