This yarn shop has been in business for awhile. Expect to find a staff that really knows their stuff. The shop is located a mile or so over the district line in Bethesda. There is a bus you can take from the Friendship Heights Metro Station. Just make sure you tell the driver where you're going because it's very much suburbia in the sense that the stops are few and far between. The quality and quantity of their product is staggering. Beautiful colors lit with jewel lamps. They advertise that they have their own line of patterns. Think Cosby sweaters updated for the nineties. I guess they are some sort of motif sweaters? Most of the time their place is totally empty of people due to the location I guess. They are nearby the Organic Grocery Store on River Road. Ridgefield is the cross street that takes you over to the Giant grocery store and the yarn shop is upstairs in that odd little two story round mall. It's also on the same block as that nursery. The one that has two branches.

Opened less than a year ago, Wiggle Room offers parents and moms-in-waiting an alternative way to shop: second-hand. Located in downtown Bethesda, this little shop carries gently used infants' and children's clothing (both casual and formal), as well as some pretty hip maternity clothing. (My expectant sister bought a really cute top a couple of weeks ago, and it was much cheaper than in the boutiques.)
They also sell baby gear, such as strollers, bouncy seats, and exersaucers. I've bought little gadgets like outlet plugs (to prevent injury to my soon-to-be-crawling little one), and I keep popping my head in, in hopes that I'll find the perfect used glider for our nursery. (They've had a couple, just not what I'm looking for. That's the only bummer -- you have to hit it at the right time.)
Already done with kids? This is the place for you, too. Wiggle Room takes items on consignment, so you can clear your attic without feeling guilty about giving away items that are still in perfect condition.
The shop is open every day but Monday and takes consignment by appointment only.

The Waygoose is a sophisticated boutique that specializes in fine american arts and crafts. The artists represented are both local and national. The Pottery/Ceramic is unique, the wood pieces are exceptional as are the Joseph Craig English prints. If you are looking for a for that special something, this is the place to visit.

I registered for my wedding at this store and the staff was amazing, the crafts and gifts were beautiful. They have a great collection of affordable and extravagant gifts, collectibles and pottery. I own many pieces from the Waygoose, and have shopped there for original wedding gifts. Highly recommended.

The Papery is part of the increasing yuppification of Bethesda, if it
can be even more yuppified. It sells very expensive paper products
like cards and ink and paper, of course. The stuff is rather
pointless, and as I said, very expensive. People do pay these prices,
unfortunately, so the store stays in business. The space would better
be taken up with some better, cooler store.

Great Store with many wonderfully hand crafted goods. These goods were made in third world countries, so by making a purchase you are helping them earn a living. Many of these crafts, you can't find in any other store. Each item is very unique and beautiful. The help there was wonderful. The Manager Hai, is a very friendly and knowledgeable person. I've made many trips in there just to browse and see the new shipments that they receive.

More
Ten Thousand villages, located on Elm street in Bethesda, MD is a collection of fairly traded items from across the globe. The prices are fantastic and the service is wonderful. The items in this store are all handcrafted and very affordable. This is a great store to try for something different for that person who has everything. Each item has a story behind it and will definately be a hit with whomever you give it to.
PROS: Quality items, great service, great prices
CONS: Small store, not a huge selection store to store
