I have been seeing Psychiatrists since I first starting having trouble with major depression at age nineteen -- I'm 41 now, so you can do the math. I have tried psychoanalysis, cognitive therapy, you name it. I've probably spent over $200,000 to date.
In the end, I decided that talk therapy, while comforting in the short term, was really not getting me anywhere and that, at least for me, meds were the primary recourse.
I have been seeing Dr. Birk since my last major crash in 2005.
I have found that, while my initial reaction was that she was over-medicating me, her choices of meds have really helped me. Most recently, I had terrible trouble sleeping. I went to a neurologist specializing in sleep disorders. The neurologist was not able to help me at all.
The next time I saw Dr Birk, she made some fairly substantial changes to my meds which made me feel like my old self within 48 hours.
I cannot speak to her skills as a psychoanalyst, but looking back over my last 2 years with her, I don't think she has made a single mis-step on the meds.
That being said, my first bit of advice is that if you don't feel a good match with any doctor, try someone else. Second, remember that you are your own best primary care physician and best primary psychiatrist. It is up to you to remind doctors of what has worked in the past and what you feel would be good changes to try. These doctors are not machines. With hundreds of patients under their care, they can't remember every nuance of every thing you've ever told them.
Good luck to all of you out there. Things can and will get better for you.

Like anyone who has every been to the George Washington University Hospital Emergency Room, I've come to expect the average late night trip to the ER to last at the very least six hours. You signed in at nine pm? Don't expect to leave any earlier than 3am.
This past Saturday, when I checked into Suburban Hospital's ER it was 10:08. I was in the car, fully treated and on my way home by 12:08. Amazing.
While the doctors at GW may be significantly hotter (teaching hospitals do tend to bring in the young, hot, incredibly smart crowd), I think I'm going to have to say that I value efficiency over good looking interns.

I have gone to him for a couple of year, but had to recently stop because he doesn't take any type of insurance. That is always been a hassle with him; he is pretty disorganized when taking money. He is a pretty good dentist otherwise. The man knows his dentistry. It is hard to set up appointments with him.

This is where I do all of my grocery shopping, but not so much by choice: it's the only place near where I live. The prices are much higher than what I am used to and I wonder whether it's 'cause the store is located in Bethesda (a not-so-cheap city in general). In order to get a discount you have to sign up for a Safeway Card. I recommend that you do that 'cause the prices there for many items already seem a bit inflated. The generic Safeway products only save you a few pennies compared to the brand name products. The store probably doesn't want to bring the prices of its products down, so it compares prices to the brand names and lowers them just a tiny bit.
This store goes through renovations often. I find it difficult to find things after renovations so that is annoying. Just when I think that I know where to go to get my coconut milk, for example, the store moves things around and I feel like the store is a maze all over again.
The store has headings on each aisle that do a poor job of telling you what is in the aisle. You really have to look around to find things, and many items are in places I would not expect them to be after reading the aisle's heading. I waste a lot of time running around finding what I need.
