A good company for used and new musical equipment is Weaver's Violin Shop. They carry a variety of musical instruments, but their area of expertise are violins. Luckily, for parents with kids attending public schools in the area, they rent out musical instruments for your kids to use in music class. You even have the option to buy the instrument at the end of the year at a reduced cost.

Strike Bethesda is much more of a fun, hip location compared to many other bowling alleys. The atmosphere is great, and they hold a lot of special events. The price is reasonable, and they have good food and drinks as well. This is much better than the standard duckpin bowling alley.

This is a very well regarded store that specializes in stringed musical instruments--violin, violas, cellos, basses. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, but it helps to ask for the person who specializes in your instrument. Dalton Potter is the owner and quite knowledgeable about everything (if you are lucky enough to catch him in.) They have an excellent rental shop which provides 100 percent credit of the rent towards the purchase price. You can trade up (either in size or quality) quite easily. They will special order things for you. I was extremely pleased with the service I received when I was looking for a new bow.
The biggest negative is the size of the shop. Even though it is in two different buildings, the space is quite limited and feels extremely crowded. It is not comfortable to be in there when there are more than 3 customers. I feel like I am going to bump into an instrument or knock something off a shelf. I usually call first to ensure it is not to crowded and I avoid it when school starts. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Whenever I walk into the Olsson's in Bethesda, I feel like the store is empty. There generally aren't that many people there, but what I mean is more to do with the shelves and the layout of the store. There just seems to be a lot of empty space. Their selection of books is somewhat limited for some reason and the cd section is only about three (long) shelves. They have all of the new books and some of the classics, they just don't have as many as you are going to find at the chains or even at the other Olsson's in the area. Prices are about the same as area stores, although sales are better at the big chains in terms of when new books come out with reduced prices.

India School is a wonderful place to learn languages, music, or dance. Classes usually take place on Sunday and/or weekday evenings, so they are very convenient. Teachers offer different levels, so all ages from children to adults can participate. This is a very good place to learn about the different artistic expressions of India and to learn about other cultures. Classes include those in tabla, vocal music, keyboard, Hindi, movie dances, bhangra, etc. Exercise using Indian dance is becoming very popular!

Imagination Stage is an amazing place. This is one of the largest performing arts school for young people in the area. They have classes on a lot of different areas, dance, theater, musical theater, digital media, film making, etc. And classes are for all ages. You can register on line at www.imaginationstage.org. This is an excellent resource and place to bring your children and get them exposed to theater and the preforming arts.
The staff is extremely dedicated, talented, and they love teaching young people.

I highly recommend Elan Artists Musicians and Bands. My brother used them at his wedding and everyone raved about the music. They have a variety of different bands to choose from and each one seemed impressive. The staff was really helpful in guiding my brother towards the right choice for him. The band itself was reliable and fully met its contractual obligations. Breaks were kept to a minimum and they played music the entire time we had requested. They are pricey but no more than other live bands are in the area.

Glen Echo Hardware has a convenient locaiton, and average prices. Nothing distinguishes it from the others; it is average. It is a hardware store. The staff are reasonably knowledgeable fro the most part, and the selection of "stuff" is generally good, as is cutting, etc. service. Bruce Variey is better, obviously, but this is fine.

this is the place to go if you are interested in seeing the more non hollywood movies. they usually have documentaries and some of the hollywood hits. i went there to see fahrenheit 911. great popcorn and i would definately go back....... also there is a great ice cream store called giffords next door.

they have great snacks and the movies are one of kind in maryland or DC. i have yet to see another documentary theater. also giffords is next door and bring your ticket stub because you get 10 percent off.
