Best

Amoeba Music on Telegraph Avenue has the greatest selection of music, the most knowledgeable staff, and the best prices. Every genre is well represented, vinyl and CD, new and us...

Worst

I might have given amoeba a 5 star review at one time but now it would only be in comparison to other stores. Unfortunately they are the only game in town. But I have watched over...

Not only do they have great selection including records, DVDs, CDs, cassette tapes, VHS, and even freaking laser discs, and very wise and knowledgeable people who can help you find things that could be in multiple sections (as many things could), and good prices, but they also have dollar-off coupons that people hand out on Telegraph Avenue all the time. Sweet! more

Amoeba Music 1/4/2006

Amoeba Music is located on Telegraph avenue in Berkeley and is three blocks away from the campus. It is on the same street as Rasputin and both stores sell great music but Rasputin also has DVDS and videos and might have a bigger selection but Amoeba Music has great discounts for students. more

$5 CDs Galore 8/15/2005

Just a block away from Rasputin, Amoeba provides what many would think is a duplicate collection, yet the two stores have survived next to each other because of their different atmosphere and clientele. Amoeba always has a few bargain buys that can be found if you like to sample strange and new music while still retaining the incredible collection you expect at a record store. more

LOTS of used and new CD's, Vinyl, DVD's and VHS 8/15/2005

Wow, what can I say about Amoeba? I guess if they don't have it here, don't bother looking anywhere else because they have pretty much everything under the sun! They have an excellent selection of new and used music and movies, concert posters, you name it. They have live bands in the store every now and then too! Just check their website for upcoming shows. They also buy cd's, dvd's and VHS tapes and offer a pretty fair price. I once brought a grocery bag full of cd's and got $80 cash on the spot! It was a lot more than I expected to get for what I had in there. The staff are friendly and helpful, especially when you're trying to navigate the long aisles of music. You can also special order items if they are out of stock, which is very rare indeed! more

Awesome independent music store 8/10/2005

Amoeba carries a huge selection of new and used music. If you're looking for something obscure, there's a good chance they'll either have it, or have had it at some point in time. They also carry a ton of vinyl, for people who love to rock out with record players. Plus, if you have a collection of old music you'd like to get some cash for, Amoeba will buy it up. On top of their music selection, they also carry a lot of DVD's and video tapes, plus posters. It's an awesome store to check out, even if you don't intend on buying anything. But, chances are you're going to find something really cool that you just can't live without. more

Ah, the memories 8/5/2005

I went to Amoeba's a lot when I was in college. Why? Cause you can get music/cds for dirt cheap. Well, not all the albums are priced at $4.99 or less, but I did find a number of CDs that I wanted for less than half of what I would have paid if I had bought it onsale at a local retailer. Part of the fun is digging through the CDs in the different section to see if you can find one that you've been looking for. The best thing is that they have some harder to find albums (not carried in regular stores) and as a bonus, they're a lot cheaper than you would have paid originally. more

You'll Find it Here 8/4/2005

With more songs total than a 1,000,000 GB iPod (okay, I don't know if that's actually true, I didn't do the math...) you WILL find music you like at Amoeba. Classical, bluegrass, pop, rock, industrial/gothic (it has it's own section!), punk, indie (REAL indie, bands the stocking people at Tower have never even heard of!), videos, vinyl - all new and used - posters and...TAPES. What other store still carries cassette tapes? Best yet, go shopping when you're broke - bring your old music and trade it in (you'll get more in store credit than you will in cash) more

Best Bay Area music store 8/2/2005

There's no other place in the Bay Area (except the San Francisco Amoeba store) that rival's this store's selection of new and used CD's, vinyl, tapes and DVD's. Don't show up empty handed; bring your old music in to exchange for cash or trade. You get much better value if you accept store credit. Then have fun shopping through obscure cult music and mainstream new releases. Both this Berkeley store and the San Francisco sister store offer free live music performances on weekends. The eclectic staff is always knowledgeable and creatively tattooed. more
