The Colophon Cafe is next to a great bookstore in this classical area called Fairhaven. You have to experience the Colophon in the summertime, I'm not sure there is a better place anywhere. Sit out on the patio and watch the kids play in the park. They have great soup and sandwiches, and excellent pie for dessert.
The Colophon can be extremely busy in the summertime and Fairhaven as a whole is just hopping with people. You may have to wait a while for a table outside, but just look around in the bookstore until they have your table ready.
Parking is also difficult to find, be prepared to walk a block or two. Make sure you have a couple hours to spare in this part of town before going to the Colophon.

We have heard so much about the Colophon Cafe in travel guides and happened upon it during a weekend trip to Bellingham. We had our Great Dane with us and they were very welcoming, which we appreciated greatly! We sat out on the patio which was very nice, but then, there we were, feeling the need to be very gracious for their kind acceptance of our big dog on the outside of the patio, and reading a menu that really did not fit our expectations or taste.
Touted as sandwiches, soups and salads, we expected to each easily find something to eat. As people who do not care for pressed luncheon meat and therefore do not order it, we were left really with only meatless options really, and as we weren't starving, there just weren't many options. We settled on the much recommended peanut soup, which was probably a terrible choice on a hot day, especially as we hate peanuts! Along with a small salad for each of us.
The people were very nice, but really, this is not a restaurant I would ever go back to, or recommend to anyone but a very adventurous vegetarian. I was even a vegetarian or vegan for more than 10 years, and this place really wasn't my style.
PROS: Friendly, comfortable atmosphere, quality food
CONS: Geared towards more adventurous vegetarians
