The Baton Rouge Zoo is quite a drive for most folks -- unless you're one of the lucky ones who live in North Baton Rouge, near the Baker area. Coming from Denham Springs, it's a 45 minute to 1 hour drive, depending on traffic...and that drive gives my kids quite a long time to get keyed up in anticipation...but they are NEVER disappointed!
The Baton Rouge Zoo has all of the exotic animals you'd expect -- giraffes, elephants, zebras, all sorts of monkeys -- and they have some other relatively new additions, too. The Aquarium is cool (thankfully, in the blisteringly hot Louisiana heat), it's dark (the lighting comes from the many tanks built into the wall), and there are lots of varieties of fish, snakes, and other reptiles to see...plus my favorite, the stingray!
Another new addition is the Otter Pond. You may remember the old otter pond, a little round pool to the left when you entered the zoo. Now, in the center of the zoo next to the aquarium, the otters have their own entire habitat built, with a glass wall that lets you see the otters swim underwater as well as above.
There is new equipment in the kids' playground, and it's very nice, durable hard plastic. My kids, age 5 and 9, both have a blast there. The playground is next to the petting zoo, which is also a favorite.
The zoo has a food area that sells burgers, fries, popcorn, and the like. Prices are about average.
If you have a family of 4 and you plan to visit the zoo more than twice in a year, the annual pass is a great value at $35. You can choose from other membership options that allow you to bring more guests or have a caregiver bring your kids in your absence.
For an additional charge, you can ride the train, rent strollers, or visit the (very nice!) gift shop.
If you're looking for a fun way to spend a few hours with the family, don't forget the Baton Rouge Zoo!

Lots of fun activities for everyone. Huge water slides , a wave pool and there is even a section for the tiny tots to swim and play. They hold concerts and other fun and exciting activities to suit the whole family. If your in town and looking for something really fun to do with your family then i'd suggest blue bayou.

The Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is a gorgeous place to go, and is fun for the whole family. You can observe wildlife and plants native to the swamps. It's a good place to go on field trips, but younger kids might get bored. Their gift shops are nice, but overpriced.

I have never been dissatisfied with my stay. Every time we stay, the experience seems to improve. My husband and I usually get the Master King Suite with the Jacuzzi Bath. Our Church has stayed over on several occasions. We have held Banquets and also used the Conference Room. This is a wonderful place to stay.
Bishop Ann Ambers
Pros: Wonderful Rooms, Comfortable Beds, Excellent Breakfast

I love the backpacker. They sell all kinds of clothing, gear and equipment for outdoor activities. We shop at the backpacker for skiing equipment. This is one of the few places in Baton Rouge that sell ski items. There prices can be a little high but as I said earlier you cannot find a lot of ski stuff in Baton Rouge. The selection of ski googles, hats, pants, and jackets are great. I know I can always find good stuff here that is quality and won't fall apart.

This was nice hotel in a reasonable location. We stayed here over the Christmas Holidays in 2005. We arrived late and had good service from night desk clerk. However, in the morning the bell boy would not let me take a cart upstairs and insisted I let him come and get my luggage. I told him I used it the night before and he was nowhere to be found. Anyway, he wanted to come up and wait and that is exactly what he did until I was ready. I don't like to be rushed just because a bell boy wants to be paid! He did later tell me after Katrina they had problems with damage and actually had a cart stolen. I understood better then. But if I use the cart the night before, I can use it in the morning as well.
Pros: Nice room, Value, Night clerk
Cons: Bell boy, INconsitent policies, Safety
